Week 1- DQ1 Introduce yourself and state what area of counseling you believe you are being called to pursue. Second, state a situation, incident, or topic you believe the class would find interesting concerning ethics and professional counseling. Include your evaluation of the information and why you find it interesting. Hello, I am Melandy Moore. To be honest, I do not know which track I will proceed. I am currently enrolled in MS - Clinical Mental Health Counseling Emphasis. I was thinking of focusing on the mental health piece, but I might go a bit broader, such as family or individual counseling (Moore, 2023). Thinking about ethics and professional counseling, I believe an exciting aspect of this situation lies in the ethical balancing act that counselors must perform. It prompts questions about how to navigate the delicate balance between the duty to protect the client's privacy and the responsibility to protect the safety of others Gabriel, L., & Davies, D. (2000). Ethical codes and laws may vary by jurisdiction, making it more challenging for counselors to decide the right course of action. I find this topic interesting because it highlights the refined and often morally ambiguous situations counselors may encounter in their practice. It forces professionals to grapple with the complexities of ethical decision-making and offers an excellent opportunity for class discussions and debates. It also underscores the significance of ethical training and supervision for counselors to help them navigate these problematic ethical issues while providing the best care to clients Gabriel, L., & Davies, D. (2000). Gabriel, L., & Davies, D. (2000). The management of ethical dilemmas associated with dual relationships. Pink therapy , 3 , 35-54. Hello Everyone,
Review the Written Discussion Requirements for this course before responding to the prompt below. In the counseling profession, clinicians struggle, at some point, with professional ethics and personal virtues concerning our client’s situation, struggle, pain, or thoughts. At times, clinicians may want to interject their own beliefs, values, or morals into the therapeutic process; however, professional ethics does not allow us to do this—even though it may help the client (this is where self-disclosure becomes critically important to understand). Initial Post: Watch Introduction to the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics (Part One) in its entirety, read the “Preamble” of the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics , and answer the following prompts: Explain what personal morals, beliefs, values, or virtues might hinder your counseling practice. After reading the “Preamble” and watching the video, explain what professional ethics may hinder you as a clinician. At what point, if any, should a clinician cease therapeutic alliance with a client? Give an ethical example and explain. Hello, All- Personal morals, beliefs, values, or virtues could possibly impact a clinician’s counseling practice. Strong Personal Biases : If a clinician withholds solid personal biases or prejudices, it can impair their ability to provide unbiased and nonjudgmental support to clients. For example, if a counselor strongly believes in a particular political or religious ideology and is unable to separate their beliefs from their counseling practice, it may negatively impact their ability to empathize with clients who have different perspectives (Moore, 2023). b. Rigid Ethical or Moral Framework : If counselors rigidly adhere to a specific set of personal morals or values, they may have difficulty adapting to their clients' diverse needs and ethical considerations. For instance, if counselors believe that certain behaviors are inherently immoral, they might struggle to counsel clients engaging in them effectively. America Counseling Association. (2014). Introduction to the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics (Part One) c. Cultural Insensitivity : A lack of cultural competence and an inability to appreciate diverse cultural values and norms can hinder a counselor's ability to connect with and understand clients from different backgrounds. This can result in misunderstandings and hinder the therapeutic process America Counseling Association. (2014). 2. Professional ethics that may hinder you as a clinician: After reading the "Preamble" of a professional code of ethics and watching relevant materials, it's essential to be aware of the following potential challenges: a. Dual Relationships : Professional codes of ethics typically emphasize the importance of avoiding dual relationships that could harm the therapeutic alliance. These guidelines can be
