LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF DIVINITY Reflection Essay Prof. Robert Van Engen CLED 300 Biblical and Theological Foundations of Christian Leadership Elita Morrill October 30, 2023
A leader's understanding of scripture is vividly reflected in their theology. According to Moher, “The Believers are driven by deep and passionate beliefs. Many people aspire to become leaders, but not all of them are prepared for the role. Enthusiastic leaders, on the other hand, may struggle with clarifying their beliefs and understanding their significance. We have two distinct groups: Believers, who hold strong faith but may become complacent in their spiritual practices, and Leaders, who are Christians with a drive to improve their surroundings and uplift others but may experiment with different techniques to connect with people and achieve their goals. God's word is intended to transform us, as affirmed in 2 Timothy 3:16. This passage notes that the Holy Spirit inspires every Scripture and contains God's essence. It serves to guide and correct us, empowering us to make the right decisions and leading us on the path of godliness. The teachings of the Scriptures can guide us in leading a life that is true to God's intention for us. By paying close attention to the messages conveyed in the Scriptures, we can build a strong and unshakable foundation for biblical leadership. The Bible features many leaders whose stories aim to educate readers on the characteristics and lessons of leadership. For instance, Abraham, known as the "Father of Many Nations," is a prime example of obedience to God's commands. When God asked him to leave his home and follow Him in Genesis 12:1-2, Abraham did so without hesitation. As a Christian leader, one must possess courage, like Abraham, who left everything he knew behind to follow God's command. Abraham stood in his faith, and his family could have rebelled against him. Joseph is yet another example. He stood in his faith in the most challenging times, being imprisoned and betrayed by his brothers. As we read in Judges, we see Gideon’s lack of trust and faith in God and how it spun out of control. He kept asking God to prove 1 Mohler, Albert. himself to him, and it ate him alive and destroyed him. In the book of Judges, the story of Gideon, despite being visited by the Angel of the Lord, who referred to him as a "mighty man of valor". In Judges 6:15, this man expresses self-doubt about his ability to save Israel and feels that his clan is the weakest in Manasseh and that he is the least important in his father's house. However, this man's self-doubt contradicts God's view of him as a leader. As a leader, it is essential to seek God's perspective and cultivate humility. Peter exemplifies bold leadership. He called out to Jesus and walked on water, refusing to back down in Acts 4. Effective leadership requires courage, conviction, humility, and seeking God's will. In Acts 2, an enthusiastic message led to a transformation of the people, demonstrating the importance of courageous and inspiring leadership. Being bold in Christ can have a powerful influence on others, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform people and shift the atmosphere. If you do not have influence, no one will sow into your vision, and God's work will be limited on earth. Most people did not believe Jesus was the Messiah until they witnessed the miracles. However, those who did believe wholeheartedly received miracles. When we look at the leadership throughout the Bible, we can see that those who leaned into trusting God and put their faith in God received blessings and miracles. They understood that without God their leadership and salvation were in question. Without a theological understanding of the bible and the trust in God being a leader is going to be hard. “The Christian leader can never have a perspective that is limited to the world.” 2 2 Mohler, Albert.
