Summary of Three Important Morals and Values
Everyone has different morals and values, and it is something that we all hold very close
to us and might even practice it on a day-to-day basis. I think the three most important morals
and values are integrity, sensitivity and openness. However, the three most important
professional values to me are honoring diversity and embracing a multicultural approach in
support of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural
contexts; promoting social justice; safeguarding the integrity of the counselor–client relationship.
These values are important because you never know what situation you are going to have to deal
with. Every client will not present the same situation, everyone is different in their own ways and
providing a safe space where everyone that comes in feels comfortable is very important.
Promoting social justice is also an important value to uphold because not everyone can seek the
right help which is important given everything that is happening around us. Lastly, protecting my
integrity is important as well as protecting my client’s integrity because they are being honest
and open with me therefore it is important to avoid harming the client in any way and instead
establish a trustworthy environment between myself and the client.
Ethical Principal Difficult to Uphold
There are six ethical principles that were discussed in the videos. The ethical principles
are autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity. Autonomy is fostering
the right to control the direction of one’s life. This can be a difficult principle to uphold because
as a counselor we cannot impose our own personal beliefs and values onto the client. For
example, it could be challenging because a client may make a choice that will lead to negative
consequences, however we must remember that ultimately it is the client’s decision. However,
there are times where we must act and that is if we see acts of suicidality, homicidally, and
suspicion of abuse and neglect. This is important to know when starting a session with the client
and that is to mention to them that everything that we discuss will stay confidential however, that
excludes situations where children are involved and there is abuse and neglect involves, if the
client is experiencing suicidal thoughts, if the client has homicidal rage, or if they are victims of
abuse. Aside from the general protocol where we might feel like our client’s life can be in
danger, we cannot impose our own beliefs onto them because they must learn how to make
decisions to govern their own lives even if it is not the decision that we would make as the
counselor.
Application of Ethical Decision-Making Model
To minimize imposing my morals and values while upholding the ethical principle of
autonomy I must avoid dual relationships, conflicts of interests and breaches of confidentiality
because it can create ethical dilemmas. According to ACA Code of Ethics, A.4.b. Personal
Values, “Counselors are aware of—and avoid imposing—their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and
behaviors” (ACA, 2014, Standard A.4.b). This is the most important code of ethic to follow
when following the ethical decision-making model because we must put our beliefs to the side
and focus on providing support to the client even if their views don’t align with yours. Dual
relationship can cause issues therefore we have to follow ACA Code of Ethics, A.5.e. Personal
Virtual Relationships with current clients, “Counselors are prohibited from engaging in a
personal virtual relationship with individuals with whom they have a current counseling
relationship” (ACA, 2014, Standard A.5.e). This code of ethic is important because we are living
in a time where social media and technology consumes us, and it makes it easier to connect with
others. All the faculties in the videos gave great advice on approaches we can make when
practicing a specific ethical principle, however, Dr. Gary Szirony highlighted the importance of
following the code of ethics to prevent a social dilemma from happening.
