Given what we have learned from the chapter “Liberty and its Limits” and
the articles reviewing the conflict between autonomy and paternalism,
answer the following questions.
Remember, you must demonstrate a
good understanding of the reading, and as this is a 300 course, you
must paraphrase your source(s) with in-text citations while
refraining from direct quoting. Let’s jump in!
1. What is autonomy?
2. Explain the difference between weak and strong paternalism.
3. Keeping within the principles of autonomy and paternalism, is a rich drug
addict free?
4. How might the practice of autonomy and paternalism apply to nurses’
daily decisions? Pose a question to the class related to the weekly material.
Be sure to respond with an active interest to expand the conversation and,
utilizing the Socratic method, pose a question.
1. What is autonomy?
Autonomy is the ability to make choices consistent with personal values,
uninhibited by others' values, and unaffected by the decision (Matthews,
2020).
2. Explain the difference between weak and robust paternalism.
Strong paternalism is when someone is urged to take action that the
paternalist deems to be in their best interest, regardless of the person's
objections or lack of knowledge about the situation. In some cases, it is
necessary to act on behalf of vulnerable individuals who may not make
sound decisions, known as weak paternalism (Matthews, 2020).
3. Keeping within the principles of autonomy and paternalism, is a
rich drug addict free?
Every person possesses the inherent right to make choices that align with
their values and beliefs, and they have the liberty to chart their course in life.
The principle of autonomy is intimately tied to various essential freedoms
that may impact the capacity of a person with an addiction to attain
recovery. In certain instances, addiction can hinder an individual's power to
make choices and seize control of their existence. Such individuals may have
their ability to make informed decisions compromised due to an inability to
fully grasp vital information, retain it effectively, or apply that knowledge
appropriately (Matthews, 2020).
4. How might the practice of autonomy and paternalism apply to
nurses' daily decisions?
Nurses often encounter ethical dilemmas while providing care to patients.
This can cause significant stress, as it is difficult to determine the appropriate
course of action. Ethical decision-making can be improved by utilizing the
following principles: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, fidelity,
justice, and paternalism (Matthews, 2020).
Question:
Given what we know now, is paternalism a violation of autonomy,
or is it acceptable?
