The ethical conundrum arises when an employer's values and the personal values of
one disagrees (Shefali Roy, 2017).
When there is something done within an
organization that is in conflict with one’s personal moral code the employee must figure
out how to balance his or her own moral compass with the organization's ethical
commitment. When an employee is faced with this kind of dilemma it is very important
to take in consideration all of the factors, including the impact on one's own sense of
honor.
If the discrepancy is serious and insuperable, the person may need to look for
changes inside the organization, look for areas of compromise, or even consider finding
another job position. When a person is put in a position such as this they must do their
best to stick to their ethical commitments while trying to figure out if it is possible to
balance the beliefs of the organization. At the end of the day if the employee has a
decision to make on whether they will continue working for the organization.
A difficult and complex challenge for an individual is facing conflicts within the
organization's ethics and one’s own personal ethical commitments. In Shefali Roy 2017
TED Talk, she discusses the threat of having conflict between an employee and the
employer.
I work with the Department for Family and Children Services in Georgia as a social
worker. In my line of work there are conflicts that arise all the time. An example of a
conflict would be the case manager and her supervisor having a disagreement where
things get heated. The best way to resolve this conflict would be walking away from the
situation to cool and then later come back to revisit what had happened. In order for the
case manager and supervisor to move forward they must discuss both sides and then
come up with the best solution to resolve their conflict. At the end of the day, it’s all
about how one approaches the situation and figures out what’s next.
The response that allows compliance with professional ethics while maintaining
personal moral commitments would be advocating for change within the organization to
maybe resolve the dispute between the two or identifying solutions that can appease
both the individual and the organization's ethical commitment. A person can also decide
to leave the company for them to find an organization that matches their values, beliefs,
and personal morals.
