The school in which I was educated in believed in multi-theory approach.
The school did not use
a single approach.
Dewey believed a teacher needs to be fully aware of students’ interactions
and responses for skill and knowledge comprehension and adjust the teaching methods and
classroom structure as necessary (Talebi, 2015). If a student or students are not fully grasping the
concepts being taught, the teacher needs to adjust their teaching method to make sure the
students learn the material. In addition, a constructivist’s philosophy was utilized in my
education.
The main thrust of the constructivist’s view is having the student able to develop
their ideas from social interactions, group work, peer teaching; generally being an active part of
the learning process instead of a passive one just taking down information to return to the
teacher[ CITATION Sch12 \l 1033 ].
The use of projects, groupwork, and peer teaching was
utilized especially in the upper grades.
Teachers who utilize this method of teaching need to put
effort and time into making sure it is successful.
It would be much easier to lecture or have
students read, then take the time to evaluate and grade group work, papers, or evaluate and give
feedback on peer teaching.
A teacher who goes the extra step again displays Mr. Dewey’s belief
that a teacher needs to have a love of learning and show real regard for their
students (Talebi,
2015).
I know many teachers who would take time and assist students after school willingly to
help them. While this may seem ordinary and regular, I am also aware of teachers in other
schools who do not stay after and help.
The readings and assignments I did this week do align
with how I was educated as a student.
Teachers want to help shape students to be able to be self-
sufficient and curious.
They want students to be quality citizens who can benefit the community.
Communities invest in school districts, school districts invest in teachers, teachers invest in
students,
students invest in their community; and the cycle starts all over again.
An important
topic this week was the purpose of education.
Education is to help prepare students for being
self-sufficient and prepare for being an adult; to understand and continue the important cultural
aspects of a society, and to help benefit the economic well being of society.
My experience in
school was to appreciate the arts and to understand their importance and value (GOV.UK, 2015).
I was also instilled with morals to become the best person I can be.
Society is more than how
successful or creative it is, but what type of people were they. Social education while may not be
easily tested, it is still vitally important.
Finally, education does have a goal of preparing a
student to be a productive member of society who can economically benefit the community.
