Why should you develop a sport coaching philosophy (4 different points in your own words)? (8 marks 2 marks each) Because: Directly impacts how you coach and you coaching practice Ensures consistency, making it easier to achieve desired outcomes Easier to make well-judged decisions and take reasonable actions Consistency also helps create respect and trust, thus resulting in developing good relationships b/w coaches and athletes 3. What else does research suggest influence a coaching philosophy? (1 point - 2 marks) Ones coaching philosophy is influenced by their experience level as a coach. Less experienced coaches tend to have a hard time understanding the concept behind a coaching philosophy. 4. Identify and define (in point form) the 5 steps to develop your Sport Coaching Philosophy? (10 marks 2 marks for each step they must show understanding) 1) Identify what is most important to you: What are your non-negotiable values? What things you never compromise on? What values you have, but could perform your coaching role without? Separate your values based on the two categories above and evaluate how your coaching behavior is impacted by these values Identify which are your most critical values: either using a Values Assessment or just simply by thinking and brainstorming. 2) Learn from your own experiences: Being a coach is mainly about being your authentic self, but most coaches learn from the coaches they had in the past themselves From your own experience (as an athlete) with coaches, what did you like about their coaching? What did you not like? Use your past coaches as the antithesis of what type of coach you want to become. Implement behaviors, values, and the lessons you liked and found effective in your coaching philosophy and avoid what you found ineffective. 3) What is your Sport Coaching Style? It’s determined by your behavioural style Each style has its strength and weaknesses
Identify your coaching style to help you understand your motives, communication, and the best environment fit for you. Athlete-centered is encouraged Learning how to performs each of the coaching 4 styles is the ideal 4) Discover your Sport Coaching Philosophy: Examine what behaviors you wish to show consistently. How these behaviours affect your athletes and their performance? Define what winning and success is to you as a coach. Write down your coaching philosophy in a statement 5) Keep it visible and alive: Review your philosophy regularly: look at it everyday Remind yourself constantly Measure/judge yourself against your philosophy Are you getting the outcome you want? If not continue to evolve and develop your philosophy. 5. Identify 2 values (1 mark each = 2 marks) that you want people to admire about you and how would you teach these values to your athletes (1 idea/value for 2 marks/idea = 4 marks). Please include those in your CPH #2. Empathy/kindness: demonstrating empathy in my interactions with athletes, parents, and staff and showing that I care about their well-being, both on and off the field. Creating a safe space where athletes can express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment. Planning team-building activities that require cooperation and teamwork. Encouraging athletes to listen to their teammates and teach them active listening. Recognizing and celebrating acts of empathy within the team. After games or practices, encouraging athletes to reflect on their interactions and behaviors. Integrity: teaching athletes integrity is essential for their character development and sportsmanship. I will set clear standards of ethical behavior for my athletes and try to demonstrate integrity in my own actions. I also aim to Encourage athletes to hold each other accountable for their actions to help promote integrity within the group. I will also assure consistency in rules and consequences and will always treat all athletes the same and fairly. I will share real life examples of ethical dilemmas and stories of other athletes who faced consequences due to a lack of integrity to demonstrate its importance.
