Think of a recent moral dilemma from your own life (one that you are comfortable
sharing with the rest of the class). What did you decide, and why did you decide it that
way? How would your moral reasoning on that dilemma be scored according to
Kohlberg's system? How would it be classified according to Jensen's three ethics?
Please remember this is an exercise in critical thought and analysis, so please make
sure you are able to explain and support your ideas and insights. Simple, one line
statements/questions do not display critical thought and analysis. Also please make
sure you provide proper documentation for the sources you used to help substantiate
your analysis. Please make sure you have reviewed the discussion posting
requirements and grading rubric before completing this assignment. Please make sure
you complete all expectations and requirements for this assignment by 11:55 p.m. CST.
Please remember that your initial postings are due by this time on Thursdays and all
replies are completed by this time on Sundays.
How many of you have ever caught yourself speeding whether it be on accident or on
purpose? I’m sure most of you can honestly say that you have caught yourself speeding
and maybe you weren't the only one that caught you! This is exactly what happened to
me last week! As I was racing from one sporting practice to the next to pick up and drop
off children I was running a little behind and decided to make up some time by speeding
a little. Even though I knew this was probably not the best choice, I still did it. But not for
long as I was quickly noticed by a police officer. He got behind my vehicle and flipped
on his lights and sirens. I pulled over and he came to my window. His first question to
me was, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” I quickly said “No, Officer,” even though I
did know. I decided to respond to the officer with a no because I was fearful and I was
hopeful that since I hadn’t caused any harm he would go easy on me as if I didn’t know
that I was speeding and that it was by accident.
Based on the Kolhberg’s Stages of Moral Development I believe that my personal moral
dilemma would fall under level one, preconventional reasoning. Level one is described
as “Moral
reasoning is based on perceptions of the likelihood of external rewards and
punishments.”(Arnett, 124). Based on my experience above, I did not admit to knowing
that I was speeding to get from one place to the next quickly in order to avoid
punishment. However, I do believe that it could fall into level three as well,
postconventional reasoning. “Moral reasoning at this level is based on the individual's
own independent judgments rather than on what others view as wrong or right.” (Arnett,
125) Even though I knew I should not be doing it because it was against the law I still
felt comfortable doing this based on my own judgment.
I believe that according to Jensen’s three ethics my moral dilemma would fall under the
Ethic of Community, “which defines individuals as members of a social group in which
they have commitments and obligations.” (Arnett, 127). I believe my moral dilemma falls
into this category because as a citizen it is my obligation to follow laws.
I knew their
laws and should have followed the laws.
