Key Learning Points (250-400 words): what two or three ideas from this week’s inputs (pre-
work, class discussions) did you find interesting (something important, or that I did not know
or had not thought about before), or most intriguing (something I would like to learn more
about). How do these ideas relate to one another, to other topics we have discussed, or to
work from your other courses or experience?
1)
The concept of how our experiences, values and personal situation can effect our opinion is very
insightful and important. Knowing where your opinions come from can help you understand
your personal biases as well understand why some people believe certain things. Growing up in
a republican household often leads to more right wing views. You have gained biases from your
family, friends and community. This leads into the questions of how can you be a critical thinker
when you are surrounded by bias. A way you can clarify the biases within your media is through
the Ad Fontes Media – Media bias chart seen in class. This chart helps a person visualize the
biases in the media they consume. Being warry of contestable claims being broadcasted as
uncontestable claims is another thing you can do to monitor your own personal biases.
Someone pushing opinions as fact can lead to people believing it as so. Looking for
uncontestable facts within claims can help clarify their stances. Overall, I enjoyed the parts of
this lecture about re-evaluating what we know and how.
‘So what?’ (200-300 words): What are the implications of all these thoughts, ideas and
feelings – for you in your life, or for our world? What could we do? What should we do? What
could/should you do?
With so much divisiveness in todays landscape a lecture on person bias can be extremely
beneficial. In order to increase watch time, algorithmic based social media like YouTube and
TikTok only shows you what you like to see. This can lead people down a metaphorical rabbit
hole, where people who are watching right wing content only see more right wing content
which then strengthens their personal opinions as it is the only content they see. Reflection on
where your information comes from may be able to help with the divisiveness of todays society.
Starting to understand why people believe the things they do can lead to less anger and more
acceptance. Looking at other viewpoints, on the other side of the political aisle can help expand
ones understanding of the issue, in tern making them more informed.
