1-When Adams took over for Washington, what were two key problems that he inherited from
Washington’s tenure as president?
When Adams took over for Washington he was immediately faced with the issue of the
Quasi-War and the affair with France which Washington left him with and had not dealt
with beforehand.

2-Explain the situation that became known as the XYZ affair?
How did many Americans react to the event?
The XYZ affair was the result of the French foreign minister refusing to meet with the
Americans and had demanded bribes which he would solely use for himself and the
French Government. Many Americans were not pleased with this and luckily for Adams
this event caused his popularity to increase quickly.

3-Explain the circumstances that led to Adams enforcing the Alien and Sedition Acts.
What did the Alien and Sedition acts do?
Adams decided to enforce the Alien and Sedition Acts because of the chaos and frenzy
surrounding war. These Acts placed a limit on rights citizens had such as freedom of
speech, freedom of press, and many other civil liberties.
Courting Peace/ Fleeting Support
4-How did Adams ultimately handle the French hostilities?
Adams had ended up handling the French hostilities by sending another peace
delegation to France hoping they would take the offer based off of evidence he claimed
to have that suggested they were ready to negotiate.

5-How did Adams do in his election to keep the Presidency?
What aspect of timing was unfortunate for Adams regarding his re-election?
In the election of 1800 Adams had lost. He had received news that his son had died of
liver cancer and once good news came which would have helped his case in the
re-election it was too late. The Quasi-War had ended and France agreed to sign with the
United States.
