Elizabeth Teasley POLS 6250 Org. Theory and Management Dr. Leah Pieper January 21, 2023 Case Study 1 You have many search and rescue groups that had a common goal of wanting to be able to rescue someone that needed help. The struggle assumptions within these organizations exist to achieve established goals and objectives and devise strategies to reach those goals. It started with two search and rescue organizations. The Jeep Patrol was a group of 30-40 men that fought during the Korean war and the Mountain Rescue Team was an organization within the Jeep Patrol that was able to assist with more extreme rescues due to the skills the young men had. Mountain Rescue Team was a team of ten young men who were an offshoot of a local university's alpine climbing club. Then you have the Dirty Dozen which was a mixture of both groups. Then you have the rider where you are more seen and less heard, they had no real responsibility to assist with the rescues. You also have the Old Guards that assisted with the search and rescue. The structural forms and functions within the basic structural tensions with the structural design. All the search and rescue groups had a problem with coordination and diverse efforts after the search and rescue services were needed because the different groups had issues and they were not being settled. There was also a factor of who does what and when the tasks get done, and how each effort that was made, could make a change for the groups to join together. Both the
Jeep Patrol and Mountain Rescue Team had an equal disdain of disapproval because of the strained relationship between the two, Jeep Patrol felt that the Mountain Rescue Team was disrespectful because they felt the Mountain Rescue Team were full of young men who were in their way of getting the job done. Some of the issues that the groups were having were not being useful when it came to the experience some of the men had before joining the groups, because they were divided, they were not able to use the tools to be more efficient in the search and rescue. Teamwork and Interdependence are critical to the functioning of teamwork because both search and rescue groups are made up of different parts, when one part is not performing and you have different group members playing against each other and not doing their job overall everyone fails because the mission at hand was not done with the group using team efforts. Also with a teamwork structure, each member is depending on the next to perform their essential duty, and a successful rescue depends heavily on the flowing relationship among group members who understand and respect one another's moves. So the Jeep Patrol, Mountain Rescue Team, rider, and Dirty Dozen would need to work more as a team and not go against each other to be more successful and useful in helping people in need. Team structure and top performance are other ways of organizing the different groups so the ultimate goal would be for them to work together to provide services. Reading Katzenbach and Smith's research highlights six distinguishing characteristics of high-quality teams and high- performing teams develop a common commitment to working relationships is what they needed to work and make sure all the tools that were needed for them to be able to provide services. So as a group, they struggled many different times because they didn’t have the manpower or equipment to be able to provide great services. “Team members must agree on who will do
particular jobs, how schedules will be set and adhered to, what skills need to be developed, how continuing membership in the team is to be earned, and how the group will make and modify decisions” (p. 115). Effective teams take time to explore who is best suited for a particular task as well as how individual roles come together. Achieving structural clarity varies from team to team, but it takes more than an organization chart to identify roles and pinpoint one's place in the official pecking order and layout of responsibilities. Most teams require a clear understanding of who is going to do what and how people relate to each other in carrying out a diverse task. (Bolman & Deal, 2017, p. 137). An effective team “establishes a social contract among members that relate to their purpose and guides and obligations how they will work together.” (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993, p. 116). All the tension that was going on within the groups and having all the past bitterness that they could not overcome led some of the group members to split and join forces or start their search and rescue, The Dirty Dozen met to determine a new way to run the organization, and also eliminate ongoing issues with Jeep Patrol but because they could not learn from bad experiences they couldn’t make the changes still being part of the Jeep Patrol. Being able to evolve as a group is a goal but because they could not work together as a team, they had to sit up, and because they could not fix the barriers of communication, responsibilities, and relationships that can make an enormous difference in group performance. So ultimately with all the tension being at an all-time high, they made a motion to split the organization into those who wanted to remain with the Jeep Patrol and those who wanted to do search and rescue. After, the Dirty Dozen and anyone else that wanted to focus on search and rescue were told by the remaining Jeep Patrol leadership to return their keys to the clubhouse and leave immediately. The majority of the Dirty Dozen and anyone who felt they would like to be a part of the new organization stood up placed their keys on the
