House of Representatives Activity For this discussion, you will research the State House of Representatives member in your district and answer the assigned questions (be mindful that you should research and discuss the state representative for your district, not your state senator or U.S. Representative). One source to find the representative for your district is https://www.myfloridahouse.gov/findyourrepresentative Links to an external site. (although there are many sources for this). After you identify your representative, research your representative to learn more about their positions and messages. Some helpful places to start might be the campaign advertisements and website for your representative. The purpose of this activity is to gain experience identifying and analyzing elected officials, skills which can be utilized during election cycles, when researching recent issues/issue positions, when trying to identify how to contact your elected officials, etc. 1. In the Florida Legislature, what is the upper chamber and the lower chamber? 2. What is the district, name of your representative, and their political party? o What year did they get elected? o What was the margin of victory for their last election? Was it a close election or a landslide? 3. Discuss your representative’s time in office: o What positions have they taken a stance on/advocated for? Were these hot-button (controversial) issues? Please explain. o How have they made use of their time in office? Specifically, consider their constituency service and legislative efforts. 4. Based on your research, do you feel your representative will win their next election? Please explain. o Please note that this is not intended to be your opinion on who you want to win, but rather an educated prediction of the outcome of the next election based on your research.
1. The Upper Chamber is the Senate and the lower chamber is the House of Representatives. The Senate has 40 members and the length of term is four years, and the House of Representatives has 120 members and the length of term is two years. The session start was March 7th, 2023 (Florida State Legislature). 2. The District is 44, Jennifer "Rita" Harris is the representative and their political party is democrat (Jennifer). The general election was canceled in 2022 and Jennifer Harris had 8,348 (54.2) votes and democrat Daisy Morales had 7,053 (45.8) votes (Jennifer Rita Harris). 3. Rita Harris was elected into the House of Representatives in 2022. Rita Harris was the first named sponsor on 7 bills in 2023 which all 7 have died. She is also co sponsor on 47 bills in 2023. Her main stance is for civil rights. She fights for black lives matter and LGBTQIA communities and believes that they should not be erased and believes that leaders should speak out against all forms of hate. She sponsored the HB 393 (The Gay and Trans Panic Defense Ban) which would prohibit individuals from using nonviolent sexual advance or specified perceptions or beliefs about another individual as criminal offence to mitigate severity of offence. The last action for this bill was on 5/5/2023 in the house and it Died in the Criminal Justice Subcommittee (Home). At the moment this is a hot button issue since the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis has signed a few bills that could hurt the LGBT communities. Rita Harris also stands for our public school systems She believes that they should be fully funded, and that the recourses are allocated by the needs of the schools. She also fights for teachers and education support staff to be paid fairly wage. She sponsored bills that would help with teachers retirement, and co sponsored bills for a minimum baseline salaries for full time teachers (Home). 4. After researching what Jennifer Harris has done in office I believe she would win, should she run for office again.
