1. Politics in Society After reading Chapter 17 on Politics and listening to the class presentation on Politics, respond to the discussion in depth. Respond to one post with thoughtful feedback. Not responding to a post will result in points deducted. 1. Describe the role of politics in society. Provide examples outside of the course textbook. For your response, reflect on how politics is viewed by each theoretical perspective. Bell Hooks 1. We can challenge and end barriers for women of color in politics by actively trying to achieve a more diverse political team. Politics are seen as masculine and for many years women weren’t allowed into politics, especially not women of color. By showing more woc in politics and featuring them in things such as school books or articles, it will show other woc they have a chance in politics too. Based on areas and incomes, it will also be harder for women of color to succeed in advancing careers and school. Funding resources in low-income areas can greatly help WOC. 2. The structure of domination is created from the notion that women are victims with men as the oppressors. We can move on from the oppressive pain through awareness. Bell Hooks states that everyone is an oppressor over someone in this world; if we become aware of our oppressive powers we can overcome the structures of domination. 3. We can move from pain to power by recognizing our positions in life and who we hold power over. By overcoming the oppressor we can free ourselves and get our power back. Marches, protests, rallies, and strikes are examples of trying to break away from an oppressor. 4. AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a woman of color in politics. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019. She is the youngest woman and Latina to serve in Congress. Politics 1. The role of politics in society is to inform the public and the economy. It serves as a way to give the masses what they want and what they need. Politics focus on different genders race and parties; it serves as a way for people to see how the decisions can better society. Functionalism is viewed as planning and directing society while maintaining law and order and the needs of society. Conflict theory works as a way to deal with social inequalities and differences between groups. Symbolic interaction focuses on authority figures and power, for example, a flag is a symbol of power for a country.
