ORIGINS OF IR Ø First World War (1914-1918): 8.5 million killed in the world’s first ‘industrial war’. Ø Prevailing view that the war had not been wanted by anyone and even the victors achieved nothing. Ø IR established in the aftermath with the aim of better understanding the causes of war and to ensure the catastrophe of WWI would not be repeated. STORIES MATTER Think of IR as a cacophony of stories about the world. Stories are not passive. They do things – or, at least, influence what what we do, what we think we ought to do, and what we imagine are the limits on what we can do.
