1.) National Security and Safety usually conflict with the personal freedoms of the citizens inside that nation. Throughout the history of the United States the government has traded liberties for safety even with the very foundation of the government, the people had to give up some liberties to found a governing body for the greater good of the nation. A lot of today’s governmental overreach is in the pursuit of what the government believes or says to be in the interest of the safety or greater good of the people. National Security is no different and is not free of governmental overreach even to the point of breaking national laws set in place. President Harry Truman signed into law the National Security Act in 1947, establishing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Council (NSC), as well as reorganizing the Intelligence Community, and the Department of Defense. The CIA’s main focus under this act is to gather foreign intelligence and transmit it directly to the White House, while the NSC was to be a civilian advisory group to the president on foriegn, domestic, and military policies relating to national security. However both agencies have used the respective powers to go beyond their legislative mandates, conducted covert operations violating U.S. laws such as the Neutrality Act which makes it a crime to prepare a means for, or to furnish weapons for military expeditions against any foreign country with which the United States is at peace. An example of this is in 1957, when the CIA helped set up the Iranian secret police, which stalked Iranian dissidents, with a reputation of extreme sadism and frequent use of torture. 2.) The most feared crime in the United States is interpersonal violent crimes such as rape, robbery, or murder but often overlooked are corporate violence crimes. In today's world you are more likely to be injured or killed in the workplace than you are to be mugged on the street. Corporate violence is against workers, consumers, and the general public, approximately 30,000
workers die from work-related diseases and accidents. Criminologists have begun to argue that workers are injured and die on the job not because of carelessness but because of the conditions these workers labor in. Workers at the Film Recovery plant who worked around cyanide were not provided with adequate personal protection equipment and the facilities lacked adequate ventilation. In 1985 a worker in that plant collapsed and died, an autopsy was conducted showing he died from inhaling large amounts of cyanide gas on the plant floor, leading to three executives of Film Recovery to be convicted of murder and 14 counts of reckless misconduct. There are many other examples of corporate violence all of which cause considerable worker illness, injury or death not only for the workers but in some instance perpetrating violence onto consumers and the general public.
