Mod 1 Deterrence, according to the Department of Defense, is defined as, “The prevention of action by the existence of a credible threat of unacceptable counteraction and/or the belief that the cost of action outweighs the perceived benefits.” With the DOE constantly updating and upgrading the nuclear weapons I feel that we do currently have the effective capability to assure our allies and partners. Our allies and partners need to know that the weapons will effectively hit their target if called upon. They need to by assure that our weapons will effectively deter the enemies. These upgrades like with any upgrade to any system help with accuracy and effectiveness. If our allies did not have the confidence that our weapons could not effectively deter an aggressor, then the host country could potentially create a nuclear stockpile themselves. They could also resent the US as being an ally and cause other countries to follow. They allies would also lose faith in our military capabilities and if that got out to the public of our allies then we could be more susceptible to attack. Our allies would be left vulnerable to attack as well. The faith we distill in our allies governmental parties is crucial to every country involved and their defenses. Mod 2 According to the course, “The DoD and DOE, through the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), share joint responsibility for U.S. nuclear weapons.” The shared responsibility of the US nuclear weapons stockpile was established with the 1946 Atomic Energy Act. Congress did not want to have total civilian control or total military control over nuclear weapons. DOE manufactures and develops nuclear weapons where the DoD establishes the military requirements, operates the weapons, and protects the weapons. I believe this is the proper way to organize the infrastructure for our nuclear weapons because the government and the people of the US do not want one sole organization to have full control over these powerful weapons. There are checks and balances set in place so that the military cannot use the weapons all crazy like and the civilians cannot design whatever they want. These checks and balances are like the checks and balances set within each branch of government.
