Sanctuary Cities
This assignment is worth up to three points extra credit added to your Unit 3 Exam
score. It must be submitted in the designated portal by noon on November 10,
2020. It is urged and recommended that you submit in Word format, 12 pt font,
double spaced, 1-inch margins.
A “sanctuary city” can be defined in many ways. For purposes of this exercise, a
sanctuary city is one that has a city ordinance allowing sanctuary to some criminal
suspects who have pending arrest warrants found within its city borders…arrest
warrants that were issued by another jurisdiction, not that city This means, among
other things, that the city police will not cooperate with other jurisdictions by
detaining this suspect until that other jurisdiction comes to get him/her. In
essence, the city is offering sanctuary to some criminal suspects, typically ones
who have warrants issued for their arrest, and the warrants have been issued by
other jurisdictions and authorities.
Respond to the following questions and prompts:
1.
Do you think it’s a good idea to have sanctuary cities in Texas? Why or why
not?
I believe that sanctuary cities are an irresponsible concept and abuse the power
that elected officials have been given. Elected representatives at the federal level
have passed legislation determining the process by which people can become
visitors, residents, and eventually citizens of our country. The implementation of
sanctuary cities blatantly disregards and violates the oath of office every city
official takes upon entering their position. The illegal aliens living in these cities
that are most concerning are the violent offenders but all of this population puts a
strain on the city, state, and federal resources including but not limited to health
care, food banks, school systems, employment, and low-income housing
availability.
2.
Assume for a moment that you are on a city council, and you are the only
council member who opposes sanctuary cities. Knowing that you have lost
the fight against establishing sanctuary cities, you are now asked to list
three crimes you think the city should provide sanctuary for, what would
those crimes be?
I think the three laws I could let slide are jaywalking, illegal lane changes, and
taking your neighbor’s trash or “dumpster diving”.
All laws have been enacted for a reason and if they are not worthy of enforcement
and to be ignored, the government at whatever level necessary would need to
repeal that law.
3.
Currently, the Democratic Party, in various places across the country, are
promoting a policy of creating sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants who
are also the subject of a federal arrest warrant. If the police in those cities
do happen to arrest these immigrants, they do not detain these suspects
long enough for the federal authorities to come and retrieve them but
rather release them. What are your reactions and thoughts regarding this
policy? Explain.
Federal authorities are being undermined by local municipalities and should have
their federal and state funding withheld for such action. These cities are choosing
theory politics over the safety of their citizens who depend on them.
From the
video on Texas, the concept of cooperation is used in every aspect of regulation in
the US with the exception of immigration. California county sheriffs recognize the
dangers of the new reckless state law allowing sanctuary. How can a state make a
law that violates federal law? Until someone brings a lawsuit over the law
inquisition and a district or higher court rules that the state law is violating the
constitution (or federal law) nothing will be done. The Supreme Court does not
comment on legislation until it is hearing a specific case before it. So until that
time, there is no way to reverse the California law other than a shift in political
ideology and repeal.
