American Government and Civic Engagement Assignment
Voting has become one of the most important and decisive acts that many citizens take
part in order to offer their support or disapproval in elections. The importance that lies with
voting is how it may affect the future of the country, and many individuals wish to have the
opportunity to share their views and opinions by voting as well. However, some politicians tend
to disregard the opinions of the younger generation of America and hinder their willingness to
participate in such important events as they are led to believe that their perspectives won’t even
be acknowledged.
Due to the growing number of young individuals who yearn for their opinions to be heard
and understood, Senator Judith Zaffirini proposed a bill known as S.J.R. 12, later becoming
S.J.R. 7, in which proposed the idea that a constitutional amendment should be made that would
authorize “certain persons under the age of 18 to vote in the primary election”, according to
Texas Legislature Online. In short, the primary elections are those held before the big November
elections to select the nominees that will make it to the later elections, and the bill would allow
17-year olds to participate in primary elections so long as they turn 18 by November. I believe
that this amendment will no doubt be in favor of and supported by the younger people of
America who are striving to make any difference in the world that they can and those who
simply wish for their voices to be heard. On the other hand, I believe that this bill may be
opposed by politicians who have kept the same rules and systems running for generations and
see no reason for things to change in political aspects.
I believe that this idea is immensely beneficial to not only young Americans but America
as a whole. Individuals under the age of 18 are simply meant to follow the laws and adjust to
them accordingly, yet even when they reach an adult age with similar responsibilities, they are
denied the same rights as those much older than them. According to the National Youth Rights
Association, “young people are expected to follow the law, but have no say in making it” which
further supports my opinion on why this bill is a good idea seeing as how it could allow more
younger individuals to become immersed in the making of the world they live in and support the
laws they follow.
If I were a part of the Texas Legislature, my vote would be in favor of the S.J.R. 7 bill
and allow young Americans to express their choices in the primary elections. Additionally, if the
bill were to pass legislature and later on become a law, as a citizen, I would choose to vote for
the law as well. I believe that this would not only allow an entirely new way of thinking into
political aspects and situations, but as a citizen supporting a law that supports the rights of
younger individuals, it could potentially have a domino effect that could make other citizens
view the benefits and justice that the bill could propose for all Americans. It would not feel
correct in denying such an important right to those who are willing and brave enough to give
their perspectives in such serious matters concerning their countries and those who share just as
much maturity and control as adults in this day and age.
