POL 201 US Government Writing Assignment/Project Instructions: Choose between one of the following options to fulfill this course requirement. See below for further instructions and due date! Option 1: Right to Privacy Case Study Certain freedoms such as civil liberties and civil rights are concepts highly revered by Americans; however, there are times when these two concepts conflict in the name of safety and national security. The Digital Age is having a profound effect on the privacy of individuals in both their daily and private lives. With technology like cameras and smartphones, the activities of people are being recorded more, whether it is running a red light, entering a building, playing in a park, or using an ATM machine. If you choose to do this option, you will analyze a case involving public safety versus an individual's privacy. Read the following article from the New York Times concerning Carpenter v. United States, a case recently decided by the Supreme Court. Click on the link here or on the citation below. Liptak, A. (2018, June 23). Warrant required for cellphone tracking data. New York Times, p. A1(L). Your Semester Writing Project must be a minimum of two full pages in length and a miximum of three pages, a title and works cited page is REQUIRED, but will not count toward your page count. You MUST use at least two sources, in addition to the article given, to support your response. Make sure that all sources are cited and referenced using APA style . Click HERE to review APA style usage. In addition to the title page and possible reference page, be sure to follow all other APA formatting standards (Times New Roman, 12-point font; double spacing; running head; and 1- inch margins). Please be sure to provide an introduction to your essay and respond to the following questions: Which part of the Constitution addresses individual privacy rights? Do you believe that, with today's technology, the Constitution still adequately protects those rights? Why, or why not? Describe the issue that was debated in this case. How was the need for public safety and security balanced with individual civil liberties and civil rights impacted by the final ruling in this case? Do you agree with the majority opinion or the dissenting opinion in this case? Explain your response. Where do you personally draw the line in this privacy issue? Explain how historical thought and tradition affect civil liberties and rights as they pertain to the issue presented in this case. Describe how politics can intersect with civil rights. What consequences do you support for those who violate constitutional rights? What, if any, compensation do you recommend for individuals whose rights have been violated by others?
Option 2: PowerPoint Presentation Using the state in which you live (or another state of your choice), create a PowerPoint presentation explaining the state election and campaign process, party politics, and legislative organization and procedure. Create a detailed PowerPoint of 12–14 slides including the following information: a title slide including your name and the state you selected; a political party structure; the types of primaries utilized in your chosen state; state party organizations; state government structure; campaign methods of a state candidate/incumbent; the makeup of your state legislature (e.g., gender, age, profession); apportioning and districting information; information on gerrymandering and its impact (or lack thereof) in your state the legislative institutionalization of your state; the party issues in your state; and three to four pictures, maps, or graphs. Your slides or presentation should include explanations of the aforementioned points. Please do not simply copy and paste lists of senators and representatives into your slides. You may include additional information that you feel is relevant, but do not create more than 14 slides. Use your creativity, and organize the material in a logical and understandable manner. Use APA formatting for all paraphrased and used material in your slides. PLEASE NOTE: You are required to include title and works cited/reference slides for your assignment. However, they will NOT count toward your slide count. FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS It is highly recommended that you seek the assistance of the Writing Center to review your work. Although this is not an English class, you are still expected to have proper spelling, basic punctuation, and grammar.
