(d) How might new media technologies and social networking help close this gap? 2. If someone asked you, “What is the government?” How would you answer this question in a descriptive way? List the two fundamental questions that serve as themes for this book and briefly define what they mean. 3. Politics has been succinctly defined as, “Who gets what, when, and how?” Explain what this question means by defining the who , the what , and the how of this question.

Choose any three different types of public policy from Table 1.1 (e.g., congressional law, presidential action, and court decision). List and define one example for each that has occurred in the last year (do not repeat the ones used in the table). 6. Critique Robert Dahl’s five principles of traditional democratic theory. List and give one example of how our democratic process does not fulfill them. 7. Concisely compare and contrast pluralist, elite, and hyperpluralist theories from each other. Be able to explain each with evidence from the reading. 8. List each and summarize how the four challenges to democracy impede effective government today. John Locke Second Treatise reading questions. 2. That said, in preparation for the test, f amiliarize yourself with Locke’s major philosophical contributions to the Founding Fathers’ political ideology in the section of reading titled, The English Heritage: The Power of Ideas . Understand his views on natural rights, the consent of the governed, limited government, the preservation of property, and the right to revolt. In doing this, have an appreciation for how much Locke influenced the Founders and especially Jefferson. Note the parallels between Locke and the Declaration. 3. How can the Revolution be described as a conservative revolution? 4. Discuss the all of the major failings of the Articles of Confederation. 5. Explain the significance of Shay’s Rebellion? 6. Considering the Founders’ philosophical beliefs about human nature, political conflict, the purpose of government, and the nature of government, how could you argue these beliefs are an expression of elite theory as explained in Chapter 1?
