Option 2
: There are numerous discussions involving the Electoral College. There
are some people that want to abolish the electoral college while others want to
keep it. What do you think? Keep the electoral college or abolish it? Explain the
reasons for your choice.
Answer: Option 2
The Electoral College is the process in which leads the election for the President of the
United States. Most citizens believe the popular vote is how the President is elected, but
the Electoral College is. It is made up of 538 members. The candidate which receives at
least 270 of the votes, is the winner of the election and therefore gains the title of
President of the United States of America.
The topic of abolishing the electoral college steams from the want to have a more
representative democracy in the United States. This move would ensure that each vote is
counted equally (Lau, 2021). Some downfalls to the Electoral College is that smaller
states can carry a bigger influence due to being guaranteed minimum electoral votes of
3 (Greenberg & Page, 2018). Unequal voting power can be the result. For example, in
Wyoming the electoral college vote weights four times as much as the individual vote in
a big state like Texas. This results in Wyoming carrying one elector for every 177,556
people and Texas carrying one elector for every 715,499 people (The Center for Voting
and Democracy).
I believe abolishing the Electoral College and instating the popular voting system for
electing the President would show the United States citizens that each vote counts as an
individual say. In the past, candidates have lost the wide popular vote, but because they
won Electoral College votes, they won presidency. This is exactly why some citizens do
not vote, their voice carries little weight in the outcome. Moving towards the popular
vote as opposed to the Electoral College can show the people that their voice is
significant. While no voting system is perfect, including the popular vote, it would better
show that the majority voice of the people is being heard and utilized.
