Structure Regardless of your chosen topic, make sure your essay has a clear stance . While it is not necessary to include a thesis statement, it is a good way to clarify (both for the reader and for yourself) and share your paper’s main idea. A thesis statement should clearly state your stance, as well as indicate
how your essay will be defending that stance. A good basic structure to follow is: Topic + What about it? + Why? For example: (Topic:) The POLI204 course (What about it?:) is a course that every political science student needs to take (Why?:) because it offers a good basic understanding of Canadian politics. Topic Essay topics are limited to the list below (taken from the POLI204 course outline by Dr. Harold Chorney). While there is no need to directly answer every question in your chosen prompt, use all that is given to you as an indication of what topics and debates you should be including in your paper to properly cover the topic. 1. “ The Quebec Charter of Values and the bill 21 on religious symbols were both rooted in the Quebec nationalist opposition to Canadian federalism and the nationalists' rejection of multiculturalism .” Discuss, while critically explaining the roots of the debate over values in Quebec, the goal of a secular society in the light of Quebec history and your assessment of the claim that this Charter was simply a legitimate expression of the need to protect Quebec's culture. Has bill 96 reinforced this stance? 2. How can C.B. Macpherson's notion of possessive individualism be used to construct a theory of Canadian politics?
