Week 2 Public Opinion and Political Participation
Good Afternoon Professor and Class,
Public Opinion carries quite the substantial influence when dealing with issues in the United States. For
example, the presidency is a publicly elected position within our government. Based upon the votes submitted by
the people, new presidents are elected and re-elected based upon public opinion. Healthcare and healthcare
policies is a major subject when running for this position. Public opinion regarding healthcare gets quite a bit of
backlash and criticism which leads to direct attention from publicly elected officials. In a recent study conducted by
KFF “Voters Prefer Joe Biden’s Approach to The Affordable Care Act and Pre-Existing Condition Protections Over
President Trump’s. A majority of registered voters say Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has the better
approach to determining the future of the ACA (57%) and to maintaining protections for people with pre-existing
conditions (56%), while roughly four in ten prefer President Trump’s approach on each of these issues (37% and
36%, respectively).” (L. Hamel 2020) In addition to this data “In June 2020, the Trump administration issued a brief
asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the ACA” (L. Hamel 2020) This act by the President of the United States
and the Republican party was an action to re-evaluate, re-construct and re-implement a better Affordable Care Act
plan provided by the administration. The results of public opinion are listed below, comparing opinions between
Former VP Joe Biden plan for ACA and President Donald Trump plan.
The graph comparing both candidates plans for the Affordable Care Act above gives a predication of how the public
may vote to keep already enacted plans. Through the power of public opinion, the vote will favor former VP Biden
of President Trumps policy. No presidential election is based upon Healthcare alone, but it will be one of the
contributing factors that gets one or the other elected. Basically, the public opinion would affect policy by voting for
one candidate over the other. The president is elected by the public to represent the people in government and act
in the best interests or on behalf of the people.
