War and Terrorism - POLS-223-DWA
Module 3
Discussion Topic
Let's dive in.
There are two components to this activity. Making specific reference to this week’s
readings, you are first asked to create an original post responding to the questions
found below. Next, I kindly ask that you respond to one of your peers in a separate
post.
Questions
1.
What was the French Revolution and which condition do you personally think
was the most important in allowing it to come about?
2.
In your opinion, what was the most shocking example of violence during the
French Revolution?
3.
Was your chosen example a reflection of political violence, and was it
necessary? Define political violence before answering this question.
4.
What is the connection between the French Revolution and "terrorism"?
Boring (but important!) details...
Your original post should be at minimum 8 - 10 sentences in length, using proper
sentence and paragraph structure. Your original post should contain everything that
is being asked of you in these instructions. I encourage you to use subtitles to
separate your content as this will make your answers more organized. Incorporate
theoretical and empirical details drawn from readings and learning materials to
support your ideas. You can use outside sources if you want (it is not a requirement),
but you must first use the course materials, and the outside sources can only be
scholarly books or peer-reviewed journal articles drawn from the Humber Libraries
website:
https://library.humber.ca/
. Finally, please make sure that you use APA to
reference all of the sources you use. For a guide as to how to use APA, please click

. Don't forget to have both in-text and end-of-
text citations. Here is the template:
Answer
1) FRENCH REVOLUTION AND REASON
France experienced a major social and political upheaval during the period of 1789 and 1799
which is known as the French Revolution. The
Ancien regime
controlled France, which was
founded on monarchy and a feudal structure. The Ancien Regime system was to be challenged
in France for a variety of reasons, including oppressive taxes, an increasing inequality between
the royalty and nobility and the general people, and a nearly bankrupt government.
In my perspective, The Ancien Regime's incapacity and failure to effectively address social and
economic inequality during that time in France was the key factor that ultimately led to the French
revolution.
2) THE MOST SHOCKING EXAMPLE OF VIOLENCE DURING FRENCH REVOLUTION
Many French aristocrats fled the nation, even requesting that neighbouring kings invade France
to restore order, resulting in the "Great Fear of July," in which peasants and commoners created
militias and revolted over conspiracy suspicions. This concern, along with the dismissal of
reform-minded finance minister Jacques Necker, sparked an insurrection and attack on the
Bastille, a symbol of royal oppression, on July 14, 1789, in Paris.(Mozafari,2023) On the other
hand, crowds would be dangerous, even to administrations that professed to represent the will of
the people, as seen by the French Revolution.(Popkin,2021,para.2) In my opinion, such events
are the most shocking examples of violence during French revolution.
3) POLITICAL VIOLENCE AND CHOSEN EXAMPLE
A political violence is the use of violence or the threat of violence to achieve political aims.
Political violence is classified into three forms that are: War, terrorism and genocide. (Mozafari,
2023 Para. 1). This is absolutely an example of political violence in which Bastille was attacked
by an aggressive mob and peasants make militias to meet their demands by the king. I think it is
necessary because at that time the French Revolution was being defended but due to lack of trial
procedures, both regardless to their relation to politics and who were protecting French
Revolution, perished.
4) CONNECTION BETWEEN FRENCH REVOLUTION AND TERRORISM
The French Revolution is related to "terrorism" because some of the leaders of the revolution
employed violent methods to further their objectives. The reign of terror served as an illustration
of terrorism when the government employed violence to subdue and frighten its adversaries. In
particular, the similarities between the French Revolution and terrorism includes use of violence
illegally against the people by killing them to advance their own political objectives.
