POL 2103C Final Exam Students will receive the exam November 28 and it must be submitted to the Brightspace submission portal by 23:59 December 8. This is an exam, and no late submissions will be accepted or graded so plan to submit this well in advance of the final deadline to prevent any issues that might prevent submitting on time. Respond to two out of the three essay questions below. If you answer all three, only the first two will be graded. This is an exam and once it is sent out very few questions will be responded to so ask any you might have in advance. Nothing at all will be responded to about the course material, it will be up to you to organize yourself to respond to the questions to the best of your ability in the time alloted. Answers must be submitted as Word documents
using 12-point font, double spaced and 1-inch margins. Each answer should be between 1300 and 1700 words in length excluding bibliography. Exams must be submitted as a single word document containing two separate essays each with their own unique bibliography. Answers should be formulated as formal essays with introductions that forward a clear argument, supporting body paragraphs that support the argument with evidence from the course texts properly cited, a conclusion, as well as properly formatted bibliographies. Each essay should cite at least 8 different sources (this can include course readings, with each textbook chapter counting as one, articles counting as one, sources not found in the syllabus counting as one, and course lectures or powerpoint decks counting as one). While you are welcome to cite the lecture material and powerpoint decks, you should primarily focus on citing actual texts –
whether from the syllabus or otherwise. You are welcome to use sources not found in the syllabus, but this is not necessary, and you should primarily focus on the course texts. You can use any citation style you like so long as it is done correctly and used consistently throughout. Answers should rely predominantly on texts from the course syllabus, though some additional sources may be used as well, but this is not required. Exam Questions: 1.
Thinking about the war in Ukraine, what theory or theories of International Relations are most useful for helping us to understand the conflict? Your response to this question should consist of a discussion of at least 5 theories/approaches discussed in this course. You might argue why one or several theories provide the most analytical value for understanding the conflict, and then discuss how some others fall short, but be sure to demonstrate a clear understanding of at least 5 theories/approaches discussed in this course using references to the readings for those theories from the syllabus (these must be different from the ones used in your other essay). 2.
Climate change is considered by many to be the
global challenge of our time. While it is a central issue on its own, it is considered a wicked problem, in that it is extremely complex, does not respect traditional territorial/sovereign boundaries, and exacerbates almost every other existing challenge on earth. Discuss the future of global environmental governance using at least 5 theories/approaches from the course (these must be different from the ones
used in your other essay). Are you optimistic? Pessimistic? Why? What do the theories discussed in this course offer by way of predicting what is to come regarding global cooperation in the fight against climate change? 3.
The Global North and Global South are often presented as diametric opposites, with countries in the Global North dictating how global governance and international relations play out while benefiting from the international political economy. On the other hand, the Global South is often presented as passive takers of governance who suffer at the hands of the asymmetric power relations that exist. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of at least 5 theories/approaches discussed in this course in understanding this division between the Global North and Global South (these must be different from the ones used in your other essay). Pay particular attention to how some theories do better at explaining the relations of countries in the Global North versus those in the Global South which are so often ignored or inadequately accounted for within leading theoretical approaches. Grading Standards for Final Exam A.
The assignment demonstrates a superior understanding of the topic. The student successfully and accurately summarizes the theoretical frameworks employed, while using at least the minimum number required. The essay is well thought-out and demonstrates a superior ability to accurately synthesize and critically analyze key points and arguments into their own writing/analysis. The argument is clear, original, well supported, logically leads to sound conclusions and demonstrates superior understanding of the course material
. Writing and structure are an asset to the essay’s clarity and argumentation. Proper citation practice is followed throughout with minimal or no errors in the text and bibliography. B.
The assignment meets all expectations, summarizing the key concept, explaining how it relates to the authors
’ work
s, accurately represents the theories/approaches, and offers an original argument. The paper is well-researched and demonstrates the ability to synthesize high-quality sources to present information, but may focus only on key details. The argument is original but may present an obvious reading of the course material. Writing and structure acceptable, but may have room for improvement. Proper citation practice is followed throughout with minimal or no errors. C.
The assignment demonstrates an acceptable but commonplace understanding of the question. The assignment presents a general picture of the response, but may include some omissions, factual errors, or demonstrate substandard research practices. The question is understood with some to little complexity and context. Citation practice includes errors or omissions. Writing or structure causes the reader some difficulty in following the argument. The argument includes only obvious observations or implications.
