Please answer the following question:
Select a social issue that you believe needs to be addressed by the federal or provincial
government. How would you address this issue and advocate for legislative changes to
the government?
In your response you should:
1.
Identify what policy issue you would like to address and discuss whether or not
this issue has been historically addressed by the government, what actions have
they taken thus far and what actions should be taken?
2.
Identify your local member of parliament (MP) or member of provincial parliament
(MPP), please include your postal code.
3.
Outline an advocacy plan- how would you bring this issue to the attention of your
local MPP or MP. Feel free to be creative with how you would advocate to your
local members to gain their support. Discuss how you would ensure your bill
passes and become a law. What branch of government would you work with to
address this issue?
4.
Discuss what advocacy or civil society groups you may need to work with to bring
this issue to the attention of the government.
5.
Discuss how bills are passed in Canada (federally or provincially). What
challenges do you anticipate you could face? Identify what legislative barriers
exist to the implementation of your legislation. Does legislation already exist?
How would you amend it to make it more effective?
6.
How would you overcome these barriers to ensure the problem is addressed and
your legislation is implemented?
7.
Outline why this issue is important and why the government should take action
and implement your solution.
Required Format:
1.
Responses should be between 4 to 5 pages in length, no more than 1200 words,
double spaced. Please submit your response in a PDF via D2L no later than Dec
6th at 12:00 PM.
2.
Use appropriate citations to support your arguments and discussion of the policy
issue and your advocacy plan. You should use a minimum of 4 peer reviewed
sources and 3 concepts from the textbook. Use MLA or APA citations.
Bibliography and title page are required and do not count towards the word/page
requirement.
3.
Please note, exams will not be accepted beyond the final due date, there are no
make-up exams, and exams submitted after the deadline will receive a grade of
zero- no exceptions. Please plan accordingly to complete your exam in the
required timeframe.
