0 SMITH FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT PAPER Jayme Smith December 7, 2023 ITL520
1 SMITH There are a multitude of assessments available to the instructor throughout the semester or school year. Two of the most common types of assessments utilized within the classroom are formative assessments and summative assessments. There is a distinct difference between the two, as well as their application itself. “Formative assessments let students show that they’re learning, and summative assessments let them show what they’ve learned. But American public education values summative assessments over formative assessments. Standardized tests — like the SATs — are great examples of high-value summative assessments.” (1) Formative assessments are utilized in many classrooms, such as History at a High School level, a subject as well as age bracket I am interested in working with and for. For this age and education bracket, there are several formative assessments that I am familiar with and ones that I have used in my own classes and on the court. One example is that of “pop quizzes” at the end of the week. Although these five – seven question quizzes do not count for any points towards their overall grade. It does demonstrate active participation in the activity each week, but also serves as a barometer for their retention of the information presented that week. In turn, using the quizzes to study for a more Summative assignment later in the semester aids in the familiarity of the material but also as a step-by-step exercise in adding to the prior knowledge and further engagement with material. Another example of Formative assignments are those in a “hands on Sorting” of subject matter and context. Where the lecture and notes will specify the characters or historical figures in a greater context of World War II, or the founding of the United States of America etc. and taking

This done in silence or within a group activity to help develop communal work but also direct relation to the source material and being able to see the direct correlation or causation of these historical events in a physical space. Summative assessments are designed to gather an “end of the year” summary of the cumulative curriculum you have taught and used throughout the school year or semester. One such assessment is those of a final or a multiple-choice test. This being used at the end of instruction utilizing the quizzes taken at the end of each week and using those questions to study for the cumulative test at the end of the semester. One such assessment that jumped out to me was the “3 times summarization”. This is a summative assessment that is used later in the semester or school year on a final or major test. Where the test will ask for three different written explanations of their particular question. Each one of the questions will ask for a written answer in 10-20 words at first, then 50-75 words, and then finally 150 total words. The different lengths require different summarization as well as displaying different depths of knowledge, where they must apply only pertinent information and get to the root of the question. Another such assessment I found interesting was that of group or individual “text rendering”. This entails the student’s reading excerpts or sections by themselves and
