SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 2 Formulate a Developmentally and Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approach Part One: Case Scenario: Gloria and Lance are parents to four children, Gloria is a 38-year-old Puerto Rican female with a high school diploma that currently works in a medical office as their manager. Lance is a 37-year-old African American male also with a high school diploma and he working as a legal clerk. The two are not legally married and Gloria has two children from her previous marriage, Sara and Jason. Sara is 14-year-old biracial female, she is half Puerto Rican and half African American, and that is the same as her brother Jason. Jason is 20 years old and goes to community college while also having a part-time job as a sales representative. Together Gloria and Lance have two girls Sierra, 10 and Daisy, 7. Lance treats all of the four children equally and has been with Gloria since Sara was 6 months old and she calls him dad. Gloria was a stay-at-home mom until Daisy turned 6, she now has a full-time job as a manager for a medical office. When his parents are at work, Jason watches his younger sisters between work and school. Sara started to become easily irritable and withdrawn from the rest of the family. She is often found on social media, playing video games or on her phone texting with her friends. Even though her grades have maintained relatively the same, straight-A s, she has been distant and tends to avoid the family as much as she can. Gloria and Lance have been together for 13 years, but they are not legally married. They both are employed with 9 to 5 jobs and share the house responsibilities 50/50. They have
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 3 recently reconciled their relationship after being separated for a month. They are shown to be very supportive and loving towards one another, however they do have quite a few arguments and they are working through their issues and focusing on establishing their new homeostasis. Sara s relationship with her parents now is nonexistent as she is isolating herself from her parents and only talking to them to let them know she is safe while she is out. She has started to become argumentative with her parents and other authority figures when she is asked to complete a task that requires her to put down her phone. Sara does express that she loves and cares for her siblings, but her parents have stated that she has been irritated and angry towards her siblings. When she wants her younger sisters to do something she yells at them until they do the task and she is starting arguments with her brother, Jason when he asks her to do something. Presenting Issues The family has decided to seek out therapy help as they are worried about the new behaviors that Sara has been exhibiting. Based on what her parents have described, Sara have cut out her entire family from her life. She spends an abnormal amount of time on social media, texting with her friends she met online, and is rarely off her phone. She hardly interacts with her family members and when she does Sara becomes argumentative and hostile with both her parents and her siblings. Her parents are worried about her dangerous online activities as they found out Sara has been sending explicit pictures and texts to male online users. Part Two: MFT Model: Strategic Family Therapy Strategic Family Therapy focuses on treating the family dynamic. The family has habitual and repetitive patterns that impact the behavior of each of the members within the familial system. The repetitive behaviors can then lead to maladaptive patterns that are the reason for the presenting problem. There are eight stages of development from infancy to adulthood, that are divided to have positive and negative outcomes that develop due to the individual s psychosocial crisis that the individual has experienced during their development. Integrating SFT and Erickson s Stages of Development Adolescence is the developmental stage in which they are changing and coming into adulthood. There are various transitions that the individual goes through that are physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and sexually these changes are happening simultaneously. During these changes, the adolescent is also developing their sense of self and their own identity separate from their parents and siblings.
