Observations of: JACE D. - Child is diagnosed with autism Location : Home Age : 5 years old Physical Development Secondary domain: Cognitive/Creative Observation/Date: 10/28 Jace sat at the dinner table to play with nail polish bottles. He grabbed all 40+ bottles one by one and stood them up on the table to balance a cotton ball over each bottle. Some cotton balls would fall over, but J. would patiently attempt multiple times to balance the cotton ball until it remained on the bottle of nail polish. Comment on the Observation (be specific/objective to what you observe): Jace demonstrated hand and eye coordination and persistence in balancing cotton balls on the small top surface of nail polish bottle caps. Social Development Secondary domain: Emotional/Social Observation/Date: 10/22 J. yelled “NO” as he sat up and his eye brows went down and close together when they changed the cartoon that was playing on the television. His aunt said, “Jace, you have to share. Its Parker’s turn to watch television” as she changed the kid’s show. Jace clenched his fits, sat up and said “Heeeyyy! NO!” His aunt replied patiently, “Jace, Parker wants to watch t.v. too, we have to share, see?” as she pointed at Parker sitting down facing the television. J. got up and stomped out of the room with clenched fists and low set eyebrows to enter another room. Comment on the Observation (be specific/objective to what you observe): J. did not comprehend sharing the television or refused to share it. He did not listen to his aunt’s explanation of taking turns and sharing. Jace refused to cooperate to share with sibling Parker. Emotional Development Secondary domain: Personal/Social Observation/Date: 10/21 J. had just arrived home; he was greeted by his family members. J. walked in waving after to those who initiated a wave first without any facial expression. The eighteen month old toddler screamed demanding J.’s attention as he walked up to J. to hug him. Jace opened his arms to embrace him and hug him back. J. displayed a polite smile without grinning as Creativity Secondary domain: Cognitive Observation/Date: 10/28 J. was quietly walking around the dirt barren yard looking around the ground for rocks. He collected two handfuls of rocks and went over to a small circle that exhibit cracked dried mud, crouched down and placed the pile of rocks beside it. He’d take a rock in his hand and place them gently in the dried mud one by one. He placed the rocks evenly spaced. He would then Page 2 of 6
he hugged the toddler and looked around the room to observant family members smiling at the unexpected moment. J. continued to embrace him as they sat together on a chair to watch a cartoon. Comment on the Observation (be specific/objective to what you observe): Welcomed social form of affection and warmth. Demonstrated social interaction gesture of hugging. Learning to communicate through nonverbal gestures. get up to look for more rocks, return to the circle, crouch down and place the pile of rocks beside the circle of dried mud. J. then placed the rock in between the first set of rocks evenly spaced one by one. Third time around after collecting rocks he returned to the circle of dried mud with smaller rocks and placed them beside the circle. J. crouched down and patiently looked for space between the set rocks for a space that will fit the rock in his hand. Comment on the Observation (be specific/objective to what you observe): Took interest in rocks and cracked dry mud. Demonstrated cognitive thinking and creative expression through placing rocks in an evenly spaced manner and in one specific spot. Language/Literacy Development Secondary domain: Personal/Social Observation/Date:10/21 Jace was looking through the DVD cases for a movie of interest. Jace would stop to look at the cover of the DVD case and the back where the description is located. He would spend 15 to 20 second looking at the images. He chooses the fifth DVD he looks at and takes it to his aunt. J. says, “Hey” and hands over the DVD. His aunt says, “Oh, you want to watch this movie? Okay.” She walks over to the DVD player and inserts the movie. J. scurries to the couch, jumps on and lays down facing the television. Comment on the Observation (be specific/objective to what you observe): J. did not display thorough verbal communication, but was understood by relative. Has grasped the idea of requesting adult assistance, utilizes adult as resource. He is aware of different movie DVD’s; showed recognition of movies by the individual movie case images. Discovery and Thinking Secondary domain: Observation/Date: J. grows interest in the baby chair. He decides to sit on the baby chair and finds it a tight fit. He attempts to close the frontal table space lock but can’t completely seal it. He notices he is too big for the little chair. Looks around the chair as he sits and notices the buckles. He attempts to meet the buckles together but fails for their short length. He pushes away the frontal table part of the chair, gets up and walks away. Comment on the Observation (be specific/objective to what you observe): J. assumed this chair was another available chair for him. Slowly discovered this chair was too small for the limited leg space and short length of buckles. Page 3 of 6
