INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY HACC SPRING 2023 ASSIGNMENT #1 Follow this link: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/09/12/watching-spongebob-can-lead-to- learning-problems/ and answer the following questions about the article. Then save and upload this page. Find the primary journal article with your favorite search tool. 1. Was this a correlational study, an experiment, or a quasi-experimental design? This article is based on a correlational study. Researchers were studying three different types of groups of children. 2. What was the independent variable of the study? What were the three levels of the independent variable (i.e., what were the conditions)? 4-year-olds. They said that the kids who watched SpongeBob had a lower attention rate, learning problems, and behavior issues. 3. What was the dependent variable? The dependent variable was the test scores they gave each group of kids. 4. What were the findings of the study? So, the study states that if four-year-olds watch SpongeBob they are likely to have short-term learning problems, and attention problems. They also concluded that the study happened after they had not watched the program before.
5. Many limitations were listed in the primary journal article and a number of alternative explanations for the results were stated in the secondary linked article. Identify two and suggest a way that the researchers could have avoided each of the issues identified. I think the limitations in this article are the four-year-olds that the researchers are describing, and the SpongeBob program. I believe if the researchers did a little more digging and pulling out, they would see that four-year-olds are still babies, so by single-handing a TV show that was created to keep kids quiet or focused they could have chosen something more hands-on than something that will have a kid up jumping around too. I also think instead of choosing babies they should have chosen children more up in age to conduct a study on.
