PSY 211 Module Two Milestone Template Review the article on the six dimensions of wellness. Then answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Choose one of the wellness dimensions and explain whether you feel it is guided more by nature or nurture. Explain your response. I believe as though all six dimensions of Wellness can be used by either nature or nurture. One of the Wellness dimensions I would like to focus on would be emotional Wellness. Emotional Wellness would be more of a nurture aspect versus a nature aspect. According to the article “You can cope with life’s challenges, keep problems in perspective, and approach relationships with a healthy outlook.” (Dienstman, 2021) With this idea in mind children growing up in a supporting home environment will allow the child then to grow up and have a healthy outlook on life and relationships. If a child feels as though they cannot count on their guardians for support or allowing them to express their emotions that will carry on with them into adult life. Explain how one dimension of wellness influences cognitive well-being during a specific stage of development. During a child's early development having emotional Wellness is very important. Having the child know that they have a strong support system that will allow them to grow comfortably as well as understand that it's OK not to be happy all the time, will allow the child to then grow with strong emotional Wellness for when they're an adult. It's important that the child knows that they have people they can reach out to “for support, like family, friends, or a therapist, who can give outside perspectives to help process emotions and their triggers.” (Dienstman, 2021). This will allow the child to feel more comfortable once they're older to also to reach out when needed. Identify the wellness dimension that you feel most in control of. Explain your response. The spiritual well-being dimension is the dimension that I feel personally the most control over. I grew up in a very Christian household however my father was Pagan and raised me in a way where I could pick either following the Christian path or following the Pagan path with him. I decided to go down the Pagan route and I have never felt more comfortable with myself. I feel like it was so important that my father gave me the opportunity to pick because I know more often than not parents will push their personal beliefs onto their children and I think since my dad allowed me personally to pick, I feel more connected with this spiritual journey. Identify the wellness dimension that you feel least in control of. Explain your response. The physical Wellness dimension is the dimension I feel as though I have the least control in. Unfortunately, I have asthma so it's kind of hard for me to be as active as I'd like to be especially when it gets really cold out as that's when my asthma is the worst. I would like to be more active. Also, I work night shifts at my job so my life and or sleep schedule I should say is pretty all over the place. I almost never get a good night's sleep because I work from 8:00 PM till 8:00 AM. Unfortunately, this also means that I don't see the sun as much and I know that can also mess up your mood and brain function. 1
Choose one dimension that you believe to be predominant in development. Explain your response. Personally, I believe emotional Wellness is the most predominant in development. Right behind that I believe is intellectual well-being because we do need to keep our mind sharp. However, I feel as though emotional Wellness is very important when it comes to early development. I grew up in a household where I could not go to my parents for any sort of problem, I was having in fear that it was going to be an argument and that I don't know what I'm talking about and that carried on into my adult life where it's hard for me to open up to people without feeling like I'm the problem. So, from my own experiences I believe that emotional Wellness is very important when it comes to a child's development just knowing that you have someone you can count on and always go to when there is any sort of issue is really important. Explain how emotional intelligence and resilience factors affect your well-being. o Consider how you can apply the dimensions of wellness to support your own well-being in your response. Having good emotional intelligence and resilience can overall affect your well-being. Emotional intelligence helps you understand and regulate your emotions as well as understanding other people's emotions. Someone who is emotionally intelligent can use their knowledge to better regulate how they will emotionally respond to either trauma or a bad situation. On the same coin someone who is emotionally intelligent and has strong resilience can then help other people when they are in distress as well and not use their own emotional bias to cloud their judgment. 2
