For the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, my score was 356 out of a possible 1,416, indicating a high to very high risk of becoming ill in the near future. For the Burnout Self-Test I scored 34 out of 75, indicating that I may be at risk of burnout. At my previous job, my results would have been very different and came to the brink of burn out with converging stresses at work and my personal life that crescendo to quitting my job without a back up plan with a three day notice. I had a month off where I did a lot of self-discovery, changed career paths several times, and ultimately stayed within my profession with new tools for handling stress. One tool I have discovered for managing stress is through meditation. Meditation involves being present in the moment, to accept one's thoughts and feelings without judgment or hesitation. Anyone can incorporate meditation into their daily routine by spending a few minutes disconnecting. I have found that if a stressful situation occurs in my personal life or at work, I take a few minutes to do a breathing meditation exercise. This helps to calm myself and be able to problem solve the situation. Another tool I have been using to manage stress is to prioritize self-care. Doing activities that promote relaxation such as exercise, adequate sleep, and hobbies. It has been found that with regular physical activity reduces stress and improves mood (Salmon 2018). People should learn to prioritize their own well-being by scheduling time for self-care activities and setting boundaries to prevent work overload with the support of organizations. One significant boundary that I have set with my new job that I will ensure to establish with any future jobs, is that I will not regularly work on the weekends or after 5pm. Some may not understand it, but I have found that in the three years since my near burnout that this has been most respect this boundary. I have also started reading, which I have not read for enjoyment since high school.
Promoting a work life balance will not only decrease current employee stress, but can be a selling point to entice top new talent. Creating a tone within the organization for employees to maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives can significantly reduce stress levels. By allowing flexible work schedules, remote work options, and offering paid time off for personal matters are effective ways to support work-life balance and alleviate stress (Kessler 2018). After my three day notice, I took a month to recoup before I started searching again for a job. I had many recruiters tell me to specifically not mention work-life balance in interviews. Needless to say, I declined to work with those recruiters. Should a company have an issue with me talking about work-life balance, then I simply do not wish to work for them as our priorities do not align. Another approach is implementing stress management programs to equip employees with the necessary tools and knowledge organizations empower them to effectively cope with stress (Wagner 2019). One company I worked with had a small yoga studio where someone would lead yoga a few times a week. I found this useful as an employee because it was one less place I would have to commute to. Developing a supportive and welcoming work environment is vital in helping employees manage stress. Organizations can encourage open communication within an organization, promoting teamwork across departments, and providing opportunities for social events can create a sense of belonging and support among employees. All of these tools will help individuals cope with stress more effectively (Schmidt 2018). References Kessler, R. C. (2018). Stress and resilience in employees. Current Opinion in Psychology, 23, 36-
