Assignment Option 2: Considering Cultural Influences on Sexuality Through Queer Experiences in Film TEMPLATE ( DO NOT remove the template text from the assignment document.) NAME: Tori De Leon INSTRUCTIONS Fill in this template document with your responses after each of the numbered prompts found below. Your responses should be original (that is, in your own words) and written in complete sentences. (Please replace “[Add Title]” with a brief, thoughtful title connected to the two films on which are focusing your assignment.) Keep the formatting on this page for margins, spacing, and font size and color as they are set now. You may include bold or italics or even all caps within your text if needed. Include full references of all the sources you used at the end of the document after “References”. You should at least include references for the film stories you have chosen along with any other sources you consulted. A complete reference includes (1) the name of the author, (2) the year the media was released, (3) the title of the media, and (4) the distributor or publisher of the media. You can also consult ASU Library’s citation guide for additional help. Add your name at the top of this page and save your complete, filled-in template as an accepted file type (.doc, docx, or pdf) to submit for your assignment. Please note the length guidelines after each prompt, edit your work so that it is clear and concise, and aim to keep your full assignment within 3 – 5 pages. People Between Love (1pt) 1. Identify the two film stories on which you have chosen to focus for your assignment and, in one or two sentences, describe why you chose to focus on them. You need to include the main film title “Stories of Our Lives,” as well as the specific film story(ies) from that production on which you focus, and the film “Rafiki” if you are using it as your 2 nd story. (2 pts; length 1 short paragraph of 2-4 sentences ) I chose “ Stories of Our Lives ” because of how it focused on hidden love. Despite all the things that happen, to proud homosexuals, there was never any asham in whom they love and how they live their lives, as seen in the Run storylines. I picked this story because it showed that even after being caught and having a negative reaction, Pato decided to stay and not run from who he wanted to be. I also picked the film “ Rafiki ” because it tells the story of people who love each other but can’t because it is not accepted. For example, the main character Kena, and the girl she likes Ziki are at a church service and Ziki is messing with Kena, wanting to hold hands. Kena got mad because her family was in there and she felt as though the whole church was watching them touch hands. ASB 210: Human Sexuality – Anthropological Perspectives 1
2. Describe the specific cultural setting(s) within Kenya that are depicted in each story. How do these settings affect the experiences of the queer individuals? For example, what does the film reveal about culturally based expectations regarding relationships and/or sexuality, and in what way? The setting could be a school, urban area, church, farm, or any other “stage” depicted in the film. Please make your response comparative between the two film stories and, if applicable, between the different settings within each film story. (4 pts; length 1-2 paragraphs ) The storyline Run in “ Stories of Our Lives ” cultural setting is the gay night club. The gay nightclub affects the experiences of the queer individual because it sets the effect that for the queer individual to be themselves, it has to be when no one can see them. This sets a cultural- based expectation that if one's sexuality is not in the open then there shouldn’t be any problems. Whereas in “ Rafiki ” the cultural setting takes place in a few places but mainly in the center of town and inside an abandoned bus. These types of settings make the relationships scary because they are not allowed to be seen in public or they get looked at differently. Due to this type of reaction from their town, they resort to the spot they feel most safe and that is the abandoned bus. 3. Describe the main individuals in each film story and explain how they are connected to the queer relationship depicted. Who are the main individuals? How do the queer individuals express or maintain their identities? Finally, how does the identity of the queer individuals affect their experiences related to the development of the depicted relationships? Your response should include comparisons between the individuals and/or relationships in your two chosen film stories. (4 pts; length 1-2 paragraphs ) In the storyline Run in “ Stories of Our Lives ”, the main character is Pato and he expresses his identity by going to a gay nightclub thinking that he wouldn't be seen. After Pato is seen in the nightclub, he runs away but once the next morning comes he realizes that he is done running and he wants to be himself without the need of running away. Showing that he is not afraid to have a public relationship. In the film Rafiki , Kena is seen as the main character, who dressed a bit more on the tomboy side. In one scene of the film. Kena said that her skin was allergic to dresses, showing that she was more comfortable in boy clothes. Once people found out about Kena and Ziki’s relationship, they got beat up for it which caused Ziki to move. That did not stop Kena from being herself, meaning having a hairstyle she likes and wearing the same clothes. Even toward the end of the film, Kena goes back to her and Ziki’s special place and Ziki is waiting for her, showing that she is still not afraid\ to love Ziki. 4. Summarize the two film stories by providing a thoughtful response to the following questions: (1) How have the relationships described in each chapter been affected by the culturally-based expectations in the settings? (2) How has either being in or seeking these relationships affected the individuals’ navigation of these settings? For example, has it made individuals’ lives more complicated, has it been a source of strength or both? Finally, (3) write a concluding statement/ paragraph that summarizes the queer experiences from the two film stories and describes how reading and writing about these experiences has affected your own view of social/cultural influences on human sexuality. (5 pts; length 2-3 paragraphs ) ASB 210: Human Sexuality – Anthropological Perspectives 2
