Discussion week 11: Discussion A Post by Day 3 a description of the type of group (e.g., counseling, psychoeducational, support ) you might form for a special population within your specialization. Include the characteristics of the population you selected. Explain why this type of group might be effective. Finally, describe one challenge you might encounter when working with this group and one strategy you might use to address it. I plan to work with adolescent sexual offenders otherwise known as problem sexual behavior adolescents in my career field. In working with this type of group, there are specific characteristics that one must consider when holding this type of group counseling. Group treatment has proven especially effective with youth who have offended. In group, young people learn to recognize distorted thinking and behavior patterns that often support abusive behavior. Group members model new ways of action and hold each other accountable. In this way, sexually problematic youth are empowered to reclaim their lives. Specializing in treating juvenile sexual offenders will help me to recognize how to implement therapeutic interventions. For example, the Multi-Systemic treatment with an emphasis on relapse prevention is a commonly used model. My group members will have to be assessed and evaluated for level of sexual offense. An adolescent who touched his/her sibling over their clothes one time cannot be in the same group as an adolescent who held down their sibling and raped them. Each group must include adolescent of the same level of offense. Studies show Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Multi-Systemic Therapy to have great results in relapse prevention (). Obviously, there are challenges within this type of group and the number one I see is failure to accept responsibility for their choice/behavior. If one chooses not to accept responsibility, failure of treatment success is to be expected.
