Robert Cialdini is one of the best-known researchers on the topic of persuasion. He also has a book out by that same title:   Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion . Summarize some of the key findings/conclusions made by Cialdini's research. In what ways has his research been criticized? What are some ways in which persuasion can be connected to social welfare and social change? Hello Class, Robert Cialdini explores the principles and tactics behind the art of persuasion like reciprocating favors. People tend to feel obligated to return favors like if someone gave you a gift you feel as if you should do the same. Cialdini talks about commitment and consistency some people feel like there word is their bond if they commit to something they must follow through. Being consistent in one’s beliefs and behaviors are important to those. The actions and behaviors of others tend to influence individuals, this means that if you see someone doing something, especially if it is positive, you may follow suit. Cialdini spoke about how humans are impressionable and if we see someone as an expert or authority figure we tend to believe what they say without validation. Cialdini had many findings that in my opinion are true one of the would be when people see things as scarce or in limited supply it becomes more desirable, and we want it. This is absolutely true as we all went through Covid and we saw everything as essential such as toilet paper, disinfectant spray and even chicken. His research was criticized as other researchers felt that he may have oversimplified what seemed to be complex human behaviors. Researchers felt that his principles did not apply to everyone’s social and cultural backgrounds. Social welfare and social change can be connected to persuasion by understanding the principle of persuasion and how valuable it can be in promoting positive change for example I provide information to my co workers on living a healthy lifestyle and exercising. I use photos to show the old me compared the new me encouraging them to change their behaviors and be healthier in return I have recruited about 18 co workers to join me in my journey on better health and wellness. Another example would be my eldest son who is autistic and very environmental conscience he constantly reminds us and others of how we need to protect and save our environment this has created small changes around our home and community as recycling bins has been added to local small business around our neighborhood and we recycle at home now have to separate trash bins.   Persuasion becomes a force for good when applied to empower individuals and communities, encouraging behaviors that contribute to the greater good.
