1 3-1 Victim Statements Shanon McGrew CJ-315-R3035 Instructor Bonita Archer
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 2 Victim statements allow others to see how they have been impacted by the crime that was committed. It allows victims to express their feelings. Victim statements can also help decide what the offender should receive as punishment. “Victim impact statements are written or oral statements that describe the emotions, financial, and the physical impact that the victim or their family and friends have suffered as a direct result of a crime” (Department of Justice, 2021). As a person that has lost people close to me it hurts and takes a lot out of you and you just want justice. Members of this courtroom, I stand before you to explain why I am here and not spending time with my family at this moment. As I cannot spend time with my family due to the defendant. I lost not one but two people remarkably close to me that day. I had to identify my husband and my Baby boys. A mother and wife should not have to identify my husband and Baby boys. Kids are supposed to bury their parents not this way. I should have grown old with my husband. My heart is shattered, and the guilt of living is even worse because not only did I lose my loved ones, but their families lost a wonderful son, and their grandbabies. All it took was for the defendant to cross those two yellow lines and I feel like I have lost everything. I believe the defendant would not be able to walk out of here freely when he took my whole life from me. To the court I ask in thinking about sentencing him, remember your kids, your spouse and what you would do if you woke up one day and they were just gone. How would you feel? I was robbed of he future that we had all planned out because of one decision by one man. I ask you today to serve justice not for me but for my husband and kids, they deserve that at the least. Thank You for your time.
