Part 1: Tell me about yourself. 1. I plan to apply to the Masters of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education program at the University of South Florida. A part of the application process or interview process could possibly be this question when selecting me for the process so it is important and valid to think about it ahead of time. 2. My name is Legacy Garay. I am a passionate and dedicated person that is seeking admission into the Masters of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education program at the University of South Florida Sarasota campus with a profound promise to foster a positive and supportive learning environment. With me, I bring a unique blend of an academic background in psychology and hands-on experience working with students in both elementary and middle school settings. During the time I spent earning my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida, I embarked on a journey to explore how psychological principles and education can cross paths. Intrigued by the impact that educational settings have on a child’s development, I sought opportunities to apply my psychological knowledge in real- world settings. Doing this, unknowingly would ignite a passion for education. My journey led me to the USF Henson Fund Initiative, a pilot program that matches USF students with elementary and middle school students. This initiative was created with the intention of ensuring young scholars are given the skills to be able to read so they are free to accomplish their dreams. During my time in schools, I actively engaged with students, teachers, and have formed an appreciation for the education process and system as a whole. These experiences allowed me to witness firsthand the importance of creating a supportive and stimulating learning environment for students during their formative years. In my role as a volunteer, I was given the opportunity to work with seasoned educators to implement tailored strategies that addressed the diverse needs of students. Through my work in elementary schools, I realized the profound impact that a teacher can have on a child’s academic and personal growth. How simply showing up and being present in students' lives can make the biggest difference. This realization fueled my passion for teaching and inspired me to pursue further education into the field. Beyond my academic and practical experiences, I am deeply committed to community engagement. Volunteering has not only allowed me to contribute to the education field but has also provided me with the insight into challenges that are faced by students from different backgrounds and upbringings. With this knowledge, I want to create an inclusive and encouraging environment for all students. I hope to bridge the gap between psychology and education as I am eager to delve into the program’s curriculum at the University of South Florida Sarasota campus, where I am confident that I will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to become an effective and compassionate educator. In conclusion, my journey from psychology to education has been guided by a genuine passion for understanding and nurturing the holistic development of young future scholars. I am eager to use my unique background and mix of experiences in the Masters of Arts in Teaching program, where I believe my dedication to fostering a positive learning environment aligns with the mission of the program.
Part 2 - Build your perfect answer using STAR Teaching - Handling Conflict Created: 11/19/2023 Exported: 11/19/2023 1. Problem/Situation I was in charge of a small group of kids during a reading class preparing for the final project they would have to work together to create. When two students had differing interpretations of a story leading to a disagreement. Student A insists her analysis is correct, while Student B disagrees. I had to intervene and facilitate a discussion where both students expressed their viewpoint and encouraged them to find a common ground 2. Approach I initiated a calm discussion with both students to understand the nature of the disagreement and then encouraged each student to express their thoughts while highlighting the importance of constructive communication. To resolve, I suggested a compromise where both students are able to equally contribute their ideas to the project that incorporated elements from each of their perspectives. This approach fosters collaboration, problem-solving, and teaches students valuable skills in conflict resolution. 3. Results/Outcome The students appreciated this approach, both feeling heard and seen. They responded positively and enjoyed the idea of being able to talk things out and work together to finish their project. They were much more productive knowing they both were understood. We were able to finish the project and the students learned the importance of working together.
