1 FBI Special Agent Paula Jordon PSYC 2330 Introduction to Forensic Psychology John Walsh July 2023
2 Career Exploration One career that I am interested in pursuing is becoming an FBI special agent. I have always been interested in psychology for a few reasons. These reasons being that I wanted to be able to help people, and understand people’s thought and actions. The reason I am interested in becoming an FBI special agent is because I always found myself specifically interested in criminal podcasts, shows and documentaries. I find my husband’s job as a police officer very fascinating, but I wanted to be able to do it in a bigger and boarder aspect. Becoming a FBI special agent would allow me to do this, while also being able to travel and see the world. When looking at the website fbijobs.gov, they are currently hiring to become an FBI special agent, and one of the qualifications for the position is having a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree. Another requirement is needing two years of professional work experience. The FBI defines professional work experience as an occupation that requires a college degree and could include managerial, supervisory or leadership responsibilities. According to onetonline.org, being an FBI agent is a growing profession that will have several openings in the next couple of years, projecting 8,800 job openings from 2021 to 2031. As a special agent, they enforce several different federal laws to protect the United States from a wide arrange of things including terrorist attacks and foreign intelligence operations. One of the exciting things about being a special agent is that every day would be different. According to fbijobs.gov some of the tasks that a special agent does is tracking online activity for terrorist, testifying in court, and gathering evidence. The FBI have specialized units including behavioral
3 analysis, intelligence and many more. Every day in each unit could look completely different. I would personally like to work in the behavioral analysis unit. Working in the behavior analysis unit would include working on new, active or cold cases and working alongside law enforcement to help them solve a variety of cases. While working as a special agent in the FBI, it would be helpful to know the DSM-5-TR ( American Psychiatric Association, 2022) especially in the behavior analysis unit, because you would be able to identify and understand some of the disorders people you interact with have. Being able to identify their disorders would help you understand the potential motivates and actions of an individual. Using personality and threat assessments could help you find potential threats. These assessments would allow an agent to analyze someone’s patterns of thinking and behavior, this in turn would allow them to understand the potential threat they hold. Using both assessments and DSM-5-TR would be helpful in a career as a special agent for the FBI. According to the onetonline.org having good communication, critical thinking, and time management are required skills to being a special agent. Receiving my bachelor’s degree in psychology would be helpful to become an FBI special agent by making me an efficient and fluent communicator, both written and verbally. This is important as a special agent, because they must be able to communicate with the public and their peers, as well as being able to do documentation and reports. My degree will also help me learn problem solving, research, critical thinking and organizational skills. These are important because in this career you might be put into situations where you need to think critically and quickly to figure out vital issues, research crucial information, and organize relevant information. Taking forensic psychology class will
