Exercise P3-1 a. Do not ask me to be kind; just ask me to act as though I were. b. When men talk about defense, they always claim to be protecting women and children, but they never ask about the women and children what they think. c. When I get a little money, I buy books; if any is left, I buy food and clothes. d. America is a country that doesn’t know where it is going but is determined to set a speed record getting there. (Correct) e. Wit has truth in it; wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words. Exercise P3-2 a. Strong black coffee will not sober you up; the truth is that time is the only way to get alcohol out of your system. b. Margaret was not surprised to see hail and vivid lightning; conditions had been right for violent weather all day. c. There is often a fine line between right and wrong, good and bad, truth and deception. d. My mother always says that you can’t learn common sense; either you’re born with it or you’re not. (Correct) e. Severe, unremitting pain is a ravaging force, especially when the patient tries to hide it from others. Exercise P3-3 a. We always looked forward to Thanksgiving in Vermont: it was our only chance to see our Grady cousins. (Correct) b. If we have come to fight, we are far too few; if we have come to die, we are far too many. c. The travel package includes a round-trip ticket to Athens, a cruise through the Cyclades, and all hotel accommodations. d. The news article portrays the land use proposal as reckless, although 62 percent of the town’s residents support it. e. Psychologists Kindlon and Thompson (2000) offer parents a simple starting point for raising male children: “Teach boys that there are many ways to be a man” (p.256). Questions: Exercise P3-1 1. Why is there a semicolon and not a comma after "kind?" The semicolon is used here because there is no coordinating conjunction. The semicolon connects the two independent clauses. If there was a coordinating conjunction in this sentence there would be a comma instead. 2. Why is there a comma after "defense?" The comma after “defense” connects a dependent clause and an independent clause. 3. Why is there a semicolon after "books?"
The semicolon is also used here because the sentence has no coordinating conjunction. Just like in P3-1, the semicolon connects the two independent clauses. If there was a coordinating conjunction in this sentence there would be a comma instead. 4. Why is there NOT a comma after "going?" There is not a comma after “going” because it continues the original clause. It doesn’t add another subject. 5. Why is there a semicolon after "it" instead of a comma? There is a semicolon here because there is no coordinating conjunction. Just like in the previous examples, the semicolon connects the two independent clauses. If there was a coordinating conjunction in this sentence there would be a comma instead. Exercise P3-2 1. Why are there commas after "wrong" and "bad" instead of semicolons in question c? There are commas after “wrong” and “bad” because it is considered a list of items in a series. There would be semicolons, instead of commas if the items in a series contained internal punctuation. Exercise P3-3 1. Why is there a colon after "Vermont" rather than a semicolon in question a? There is a colon after “Vermont” rather than a semicolon because it explains the original clause. 2. Why is there NOT a colon after "includes" in question c? There is no colon after “includes” because it includes the word “a.” 3. Why is there a colon after "children" in question e? There is a colon after “children” because it introduces a quote by previewing what it is going to say.
