PSY 328 Project Two Template For this project, you will create a professional blog post highlighting what you have learned about personality theory applied to yourself in the workplace. The purpose of the post is to promote and encourage similar reflection from peers. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Insert 3 to 5 sentences for each bullet. Delete the bullets when you are done so your finished product will resemble a blog post. Personality In the Workplace Personality and the Individual The Big Five Personality assessment that I took showed that I have lower range extroversion, very low emotional stability, very high agreeableness, slightly low conscientiousness, and higher imagination/intellect. Having lower conscientiousness did surprise me, but having high agreeableness was expected due to my excelling in my customer service jobs. Being interested in therapy as my future career, I think that agreeableness is something that is going to be helpful in my success for that job. Due to my introverted nature, a quieter less populated work environment would be the most beneficial and comfortable for me. Something that is remote or in a small private practice setting would make it so that I do not have to be overly social if I don’t want to be. Having lower emotional stability will also make it easier to feel less overwhelmed if I’m in a quieter environment. The traits that I would look for in an ideal manager would be someone that has a similar level of agreeableness as me. If there is somebody that I feel will be understanding of my working style, even if it isn’t the same type, that would make it a more productive working environment. Someone who has a higher consciousness score is also something that I would like to see in a manager. Knowing that my boss is organized and task oriented is something that would also make me want to do the same thing. Personality and Teams My behavior would be likely to shift depending on what type of setting I’m working in. Due to my agreeableness, if I were working in a group, I would develop a temporary extroversion to include myself and be active in the group. Working with a group may make it so that even though I am trying to participate more, I am not going to be as involved in the work as I would on my own. If I were doing an individual project, I would feel less pressure and feel that I would do a better job at the task at hand. Extroversion and conscientiousness would be the most beneficial traits to have in a group work setting. Being extroverted would certainly make it so that the person is much more comfortable working with others. Being more relaxed in your environment is a great way to produce better quality work. Being conscientious is also a major strength to a team because there is an expectation for them to be organized and hard working. Extroversion and conscientiousness can also be a weakness in a team if someone feels overly competitive and may try to undermine their coworkers. My introversion being put to the side to participate with a team at work is an example of a person-situation scenario. While my introversion is something I feel when I am in my personal 1
time, while I am working, I am outgoing and friendly to everyone. Working in customer service requires a level of friendliness and conversation with others. After I am done working, I go back to being less social and spending most of my time alone, or with a select few people. If I were having a conflict with a coworker, I would attempt to speak with them about it to get to the root of the problem and see if we can find a solution. My agreeableness trait would come in handy in this situation, as it makes me sympathetic. Being understanding of someone else’s emotions would make things easier to work out because I am flexible and want to make others happy. Personality, Stress, and Coping Personality traits are ways that someone acts that are stable and consistent, while states are fleeting and temporary (Lazarus, 2017). Being able to differentiate a coworker’s personality states and personality traits could take some time and awareness of the person’s behaviors. An example of this would be if someone is calm in most interactions, but occasionally gets overwhelmed in certain situations. This would indicate that they have an emotionally stable trait, with a state of sometimes being stressed. If I encountered a stressed peer at work, depending on their traits and work style I could use my agreeableness trait to sympathize with them and offer my assistance. Having an ally might make someone feel less stressed out and feel that they can manage the issue better because they’ll have assistance. Being able to work together could reduce the workload and be mutually beneficial. I would know if my stress in the workplace became too high because I could feel overwhelmed or may make mistakes. I would like to work on my emotional stability to manage stress levels in a healthier way. To reduce my stress levels, I would work on recognizing if my anxiety levels were getting too high, and practice different grounding techniques in order to calm myself down. These types of techniques would hopefully increase my emotional stability in handling stress not only at work, but in my personal life as well. References Cherry, K. (2023, March 11).
