After reading through the list of General Recommendations for Working with Students who Have Specials Needs, the suggestion I enjoyed learning more about was “Seeking new technologies that can facilitate students’ learning and performance” (Ormond, 2016, pg. 189.) A variety of students who have specials needs require assistance with learning and communicating with their teachers and peers. The availability and usage of different technological devices have helped students with disabilities in various ways. One of these ways is the ability to communicate with those around them and to help manage their sensory overload (Clarke, 2022). This recommendation is particularly important because all students should have an equitable opportunity for learning within the classroom. While the usage of technology is important for students with special needs, it can also be widely used for students who do not have special needs. According to Giles and Shaw (2011), “If technology is absent in our schools, students will struggle to become literate in our society.” All students should have the opportunity to get the most out of their learning. While many of the technological devises in the classroom are used for those students who have diagnosed special needs, there is a great chance there are other students in the classroom who have not yet been diagnosed with special needs and are benefitting from the use of technology as well. There are numerous ways that technology can be integrated into the classroom. One of these ways that has been the most common in today’s classrooms are the implementation of Smartboards. Smartboards have really changed the classroom in the recent years. What used to be a boring lesson on a whiteboard has now become a fun interactive lesson that helps boost student engagement. According to Crystal Parmeter (2012) “The SMART Board gives teachers the ability to provide engaging lessons for a variety of students and diverse learners at any grade level” (pg. 4). While the reading suggests that the use of technology is beneficial for students with special needs, Smartboards can be used in all classrooms to engage students and boost their desire to learn. Another piece of technology that is aimed more towards the special needs student population are the use of word processors. This specific tool is used for many students who have special needs like dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or other intellectual disabilities. A word processor helps students read and write by predicting the words they are trying to speak. A student is able to sound out the word, and the word processor will present the word and will even read the words back to the student. This is and amazing device that has helped numerous students with special needs. Technology has become such a great way for teachers to work with their students that have specials needs. Since the implementation of assistive technology in the classroom, there has been a significant increase in student academic performance, independence, and future opportunities for employment (Clarke, 2022).
