SA-03: Depression & Suicide There are many signs and symptoms of depression, but some of the most important include the following: constantly sad or anxious, feeling hopeless, guilty, or worthless, being more irritable or agitated, losing interest in hobbies or activities, and lower energy. For an individual to be diagnosed with depression, they must possess at least five symptoms of depression every day for 2 weeks, displaying those symptoms nearly all day (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). Although it takes 2 weeks for someone to be diagnosed with depression, you shouldn’t wait that long to seek help. It is important to seek help and treatment as soon as possible whether you or someone else is experiencing depression. By addressing it early on, it can prevent symtpoms from worsening and produce more effective outcomes. College students are urged to seek help if they think they may be suffering from depression because it could lead to severe problems. These problems include anxiety, poor academic performance, substance abuse, irrational and even violent behavior, and suicide. If not treated, a college student could also develop more mental disorders later in their lives. Seeking treatment for depression will help reduce and eliminate these problems and prevent new problems in the future. Depression treatment usually involves medication or psychotherapy but can be a combination of both. Brain stimulation therapy is also another treatment option if medication and psychotherapy does not reduce symptoms. Antidepressants such as esketamine are medications used to treat depression and can alleviate symptoms in just a few weeks. Psychotherapy, also known as counseling, helps individuals with depression change their habits through teaching them new ways to think and behave. Brain stimulation therapy such as electroconvulsive therapy and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation utilizes electricity or magnetic waves to inhibit the brain (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). A change in behavior or development of new behaviors could indicate that someone is considering suicide. This could be seen in how someone talks, their behavior, and their mood. Some warning signs to look out for in how someone talks are if they talk about killing themselves, feeling hopeless, or having no reason to live. Some warning signs to look out for in someone’s behavior are an increase in substance usage, looking for suicide methods, isolation, or withdrawing from hobbies or activities. Some warning signs to look for in someone’s mood are depression, anxiety, irritability, anger, or shame. If you or someone you know exhibits these warning signs, you should take it very seriously and seek professional help. If it is someone you know, you should talk to them in private and tell them that you care. Some resources that may help are the UMD Counseling Center: (301) 314-7651 or if off-campus, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: 988.
