classroom rules consequences when they are broken, consequences need to be instantly, make sure to praise good behavior immediately using positive reinforcement, when teaching be patient and sensitive Meeting Language Development/Learning Barrier Needs: Types Learning Needs Instructional Strategies to Meet the Learning Needs Communication Issues with language and speech, may have a small vocabulary and have trouble forming sentences Encourage participation in class discussions/activities, assist with certain discussions, making sure directions are written down and they write down notes, be patient as the student is talking, allow more time for oral assignments Language 1. Expressive- struggle to create sentences that make sense. 2. Receptive- hard to understand what others are saying, makes them respond in ways that do not make sense. 3. Mixed receptive- hard to use and understand language Students may need to listen to something instead of reading it, they made need instructions read out loud, recorded lessons instead of taking notes, have more time to complete a task, extra time with spoken directions Meeting Physical Development/Learning Barrier Needs: Types Learning Needs Instructional Strategies to Meet the Learning Needs Hunger Mood may be down, lack of concentration, less energy, headaches, poor mental health, lack in social/emotional skills compared to others The student needs to eat before learning, Lack of sleep Have issues with memory/paying attention, emotional issues, behavioral issues Make the lessons engaging by including fun activities, have a wind down area that the student can use if overwhelmed Orthopedic Absent from school, gets tired quickly, hinder physical participation, different seating arrangements The teacher may place the student closer to the door, so it is easier for the student to enter/exit the classroom, they may add technology for this student to make it easier to communicate Homelessness Absent from school, changing schools, more risk of being bullied, and poor grades, may engage in risky behavior , worried about where they are going to sleep, lack of sense of safety Teachers may need to supply school supplies for these students, positive classroom environment
