Boaman1 Week 2.1 Classroom Management Assignment Based upon the video, I believe that it is more effective to utilize proactive classroom management. I understand that I cannot predict every curveball that might come my way, but there are plenty that I can. Reactive classroom is more effective because it is for me as the teacher to intervene in disruptive situations to control and correct students’ behavior which is to either eliminate misbehavior or maximize good behavior. A reactive classroom will help the teacher without losing control over difficult classroom situations and to act quickly before things get out of hand. Properly handing students’ behaviors in the classroom is very important. Classroom management techniques from the video are whispering to the student to redirect in a private way so the child does not feel embarrassed for being called out. Another classroom management technique that I believe is effective that I never thought of until watching the video is the secrete signal. The secrete signal is used so when the student sees the teacher use the secrete signal, it means to get resituated. The secrete signal might work with a couple students, not the whole class. Non-verbal cues to redirect students which would be raising eyebrows, giving a “one minute” figure signal, shaking head “yes”, and smiles. I believe that the non-verbal cues can show the students my energy if I am happy with their behavior, angry, or upset. I remember from my prior education teachers using non- verbal cues all the time. For example, if the classroom was getting out of hand, the teacher would turn off the lights or else the teacher would be quiet
Boaman2 and have no emotion if everyone was calling out at the same time. Having individual techniques is very important but also to have classroom techniques. This is so students do not use me to self-regulate. A classroom technique I can use at the end of the day is giving out candy to students who are all packed up and their cubby cleaned/closed by saying “Sam is all ready to go home”, “Ben thank you for being packed up, cubby emptied, the door is closed”. Students want their name to be called on and want a piece of candy. The classroom technique that I know I will use right away is the behavior clip down chart depending on the grade I am teaching. If I am teaching third grade and younger, if he/she was on “rock star” all day, he/she will get a prize out of the prize box. This is a visual individual technique because students want their name to be on the “rock star” all day to get a prize. Another classroom technique I can use to monitor their behavior is working towards a goal. For example, my classroom will have a jar and whenever the class does something with excellent behavior, they will get pom-poms added to the jar. Such as lining up in a straight line and walking in the halls quietly. When the jar is filled up, the prize will be a pizza party and a movie.
