My Disease Risk Factors Jasmine Jones Department of Psychology, Keiser University PSY1012: Introduction to Psychology Dr.Howard Fero Due date: 11-20-2022 1
Results of Disease Risk Assessment I selected to take the stroke assessment because I have high blood pressure, diagnosed at the age of 6, and a strong family history of high blood pressure, with high stroke-related mortality. My assessment revealed my risk level to be, much above average, (Siteman Cancer Center, 2020) What I Learned Anyone of any age can have a stroke, but there are specific things that increase the risk and chances of having a stroke. The best way to protect me from a stroke is to understand the risks and take the necessary steps to help reduce those risks. While I can’t control my age, family history, or medical diagnosis of high blood pressure, I can take steps to lower my chances of having a stroke. High blood pressure is a leading cause of stroke. So it is essential that I take my daily medications and make some lifestyle changes to effectively lower and maintain my blood pressure. In addition to my medication regimen, I have adjusted my diet that consists of foods with low saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, and sodium because all of these in high excess can be linked to stroke. These are hard but necessary adjustments, that add years to my life . I have also implemented more exercise into my normal routine, as its suggested that the lack of physical activity leads to other health conditions that can raise the risk of stroke. Regular exercise can lower these health conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. (CDC, 2022) Unfortunately, I will always be at risk due to my blood pressure but Hopefully these preventions can help. Word Count: 2
