Participants are taking part in a sleep study to determine whether having their sleep interrupted affects exam performance the next day. They were randomly assigned to either a group that was woken up at various times throughout the night or a group that was allowed to sleep throughout the night. Independent Variable: If they were allowed to sleep through the night or if they were woken up Dependent Variable: How well they did on an exam the next day Experimental Group: The group that was woken up through the night Control Group: People who were not woken up through the night 2. Participants took part in a study to determine whether caffeine consumption would affect how quickly they could press a button after a light was flashed. One group drank lemonade, while the other group drank a caffeinated energy drink. Independent Variable: Drinking Caffeine Dependent Variable: Testing how fast they could press a button after the light was flashed Experimental Group : The group drinking caffeine Control Group: The Group drinking Lemonade 3. Pharmaceutical Company X conducted an experiment to determine if its new migraine headache pill would alleviate migraine headaches. One group was given a placebo (sugar pill), while the other group was given the new pill. Independent Variable: A migraine pill Dependent Variable: To see if the pill would help alleviate symptoms of the migraine Experimental Group: The group receiving the pill Control Group: The group taking a placebo pill 4. College Y conducted an experiment to determine if freshmen who had their schedules made for them had better GPAs at the end of their freshman year compared to freshmen who made up their own schedules. Independent Variable : Freshman having their schedules made for them Dependent Variable: Testing to see if they had better GPAs Experimental Group: The group having their schedules made for them Control Group: Freshman making their own schedules
