Week 1 Discussion post Teen Suicide and Bullying Case by case basis Teen suicide is a complex issue that needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis. However, both emotional turbulence and social hostility can culminate in an unstable mental state. Teenagers struggle through this because their brains are changing, hormones are surging, and they are still finding their own identity; this makes them vulnerable to influences (Hemmen, 2013). Social media makes it difficult for teens to find their identity because they do not meet society’s unrealistic expectations. This can lead teens to try and reach an unobtainable goal and create emotional turbulence. Social hostility comes when a teen is not accepted for who they have chosen to become. This can lead to a hostile environment for them since they have not been accepted, and can lead to an unhealthy mental state. Both emotional turbulence and social hostility play a role in teen suicide. Why an adolescent might turn to suicide. Kohlber’s Theory, the second level, conventional moral reasoning, leads to individuals becoming suicidal based on developing the desire to please others (Coon et al., 2022). Gilligan’s theory reinforces that each adolescent is on case-by-case bases because depending on an individual's sex, they tend to think and feel differently about situations (Coon et al., 2022). Parents play a huge role in the social development of individuals. Erikson’s theory shows that different styles of parenting can help or hinder how an individual can deal with stressors later in life (Coon et al., 2022). Erikson also states that being a good parent and nurturing babies creates a bond with them; this special bond becomes unbreakable and helps babies grow into successful adults. Suggestion for Teen Victims of Bullying.
Erikson’s theory would likely provide an advantage for babies by creating a nurturing environment for them. This will significantly help an individual when they grow into their teenage years. Listening to the teens and encouraging them to discuss their feelings and problems is essential. They also need to be informed that they can overcome any challenge with the right tools and guidance. Parents must also help their children by removing or limiting stressors like social media and phones and providing healthier alternatives. Parents must demonstrate that social media is full of unrealistic expectations of society and that being different is normal and they should not feel any less important. References Hemmen, L.
