1 Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory Grand Canyon University CNL-500 Dr. Julie Lerwick December 12, 2023
2 Introduction Psychoanalysis originated due to the appreciation and power of individuals speaking to one another about issues that may be difficult to understand (APsA, 2023). Psychoanalytic theory is based on the concept that people are motivated by the conflicts between   conscious and unconscious forces (Murdock, 2017). The goal of psychoanalysis therapy is to ensure that the client is aware of their unconscious conflicts which will guide them in better understanding their thoughts and actions. Sigmund Freud is the founder of psychoanalytic theory which ultimately suggest that an individual’s behavior is motivated by unconscious thoughts, urges and memories (Cherry. 2022). Through the psychoanalysis therapy process goals are developed and intervention strategies are outlined. Therapist should demonstrate cultural awareness while providing services per the ACA code of ethics while keeping in mind all client needs (ACA, 2014). This case study analysis will focus on Brett, who is 15 years old, and it will utilize the psychoanalytic theory approach. Goals of Counseling When people engage in therapy it is usually for a purpose or goal. The general goal of therapy is to gain relief of symptoms and improve your daily functioning which leads to an improvement in your overall life (NIMH, 2023). People tend to seek therapy when they are faced with stressful situations that they are not able to manage on their own. Per our textbook, the goal of psychoanalysis is to assist the client to resolve unconscious conflicts and to empower their ego by channeling energy to their conscious mind (Murdock, 2017). This approach does not focus on symptoms as they are not the root of the problem. If the therapy addresses the foundational issues the symptoms will subside.
3 In Brett’s situation he is demonstrating symptoms associated with gender identity, familial conflict, bullying, and academics. These symptoms can be due to the underlining issue for Brett, which is his experience with gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria refers to the psychological distress that comes from a person’s inner conflict associated with their sex at birth and what they identify as (APA, 2022). Gender dysphoria is often experienced post puberty, which is the case for Brett. Brett’s goal through the psychoanalytic therapy approach would be for him to gain insight on how his experience with gender dysphoria is influencing all the other major stressors in his life. Strengthening his ego is another approach that Brett can have through this therapeutic approach which would ultimately give him more control of his emotions, responses, and decision making thus cultivating resiliency (Staik, 2012). Treatment Expectations and Role In utilizing the psychoanalytic therapy approach techniques that address Brett’s social and cultural needs must be implemented by the counselor. Counselors must maintain cultural competence and demonstrate a respect of clients believes which includes gender identity (ASCA, 2022). Those in a counselor role must exercise great care to refrain from placing their personal ideals and believes onto a client (ASCA, 2022). In Brett’s case it is imperative that a counselor refrains from promoting their personal believes around gender identity. Through this therapeutic approach a counselor must act as a blank screen to allow Brett to transfer any unconscious feelings he might have. Psychoanalytic therapy is usually free flowing and consist of ongoing weekly one on one sessions (Dorwart, 2023). This therapeutic approach typically consists of weekly one on one sessions that last about an hour a session. The counseling relationship typically last a minimum of 40 sessions and can be ongoing for two years. When analyzing Brett’s case it is very possible that he can engage in a long term counseling relationship. The major stressors that he is currently exhibiting are not going to go away from one day to the next. The expectation is that Brett can
