Chapter 8 Sexual Arousal Sexual Response Cycle- 4 stages (Johnson and Masters) - Observes 10,000 sexual response cycles 1. Excitement a. Begins with feelings of arousal i. Arousal in males: 1. Penis becomes erect 2. Nipples become erect ii. Arousal in females 1. Vaginal lubrication 2. Clitoris and inner lips swell 3. Nipples become erect 4. Upper portion of the vagina expands (“ballooning”) 2. Plateau a. Body changes intensify i. Increase in blood pressure, breathing, and heartbeat ii. Arousal in males: 1. Testicles pull upward iii. Arousal in females: 1. Vagina swells 2. Clitoris becomes extremely sensitive 3. Orgasm a. Orgasm- an intense sensation at the peak of sexual arousal, followed by a release od sexual tensions i. Orgasm response in males: 1. Ejaculatory inevitability a. Ejaculate is forced into the bulb at the base of the urethra 2. Ejaculation from the urethra ii. Orgasm in females: 1. Orgasmic platform a. Contractions that cause a tightening at the entrance of the vagina 2. Series of muscular contractions a. Some experience ejaculation 4. Resolution a. The body returns to its unaroused state b. Orgasm triggers a release of muscular tension and of blood from the engorged muscles c. Loss of erection in the penis d. Loss of engorgement of the clitoris e. Men enter a refractory period i. Males cannot be sexually aroused
Triphasic Model of Sexual Response - DIFFERENCE: has psychological components - 1. Sexual Desire - 2. Vaso congestion of the genitals - 3. Muscular contractions of the orgasm phase Dual Control Model of Sexual Response - Proposes that there are two processes that underlie human sexual response: o Excitation- responding to sexual stimuli with arousal o Inhibition- inhibiting sexual arousal Erogenous Zones - Erogenous zones- areas of the body that are especially sensitive to sexual stimulation - Women: o Mouth/lips o Ears o Back and nape of neck o Breasts and nipples o Clitoris and vagina o Lower back o Inner thigh - Men: o Mouth/lips o Ears o Back and nape of neck o Pubic hairline o Penis and scrotum o Inner thigh o Perineum Autoeroticism - Sexual self-stimulation - Masturbation – stimulation of one’s own genitals - Sexual fantasy – conscious mental imagery that is sexually arousing Sexual techniques - Coitus – insertion of the penis into the vagina - Cunnilingus – mouth stimulation of the vulva - Fellatio – mouth stimulation of the penis - Anal intercourse – insertion of the penis into the partner’s rectum - Anilingus – mouth stimulation of the anus - Interfemoral intercourse – moving the penis between the thighs of one’s partner - Tribadism – sexual activity between two women in which the genitals are stimulated by being rubbed against each other
