Week 1 – Assignment: Explore What is Meant by Qualitative Data Analysis Erjola Lena Northcentral University EDR-8206 v1: Applied Qualitative Analysis Professor: Dr. Brandon Simmons June 4, 2023 Qualitative Data Analysis
As a qualitative researcher, there are several methods to conduct research and analysis. These methods include interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and observations to collect data. This paper will focus on the coding process and explain how it contributes to qualitative research. The objective is to explain the data analysis techniques transparently used in qualitative research and carefully analyze each stage of the process. Coding Data collection must be labeled and organized before themes may be identified. Researchers can categorize replies and establish links between them using this process, known as coding. By rephrasing similar comments differently, coding helps ensure correct data analysis (Bloomberg & Volpe, 2019; Elliot, 2018). After collecting and organizing the data, the researcher must now move on to analyzing it. According to Bloomberg and Volpe (2019), qualitative analysis involves carefully studying data to identify recurring patterns and understand the message being conveyed. The following five methods are used to analyze data according to Creswell and Poth (2018): 1. Content analysis 2. Narrative analysis 3. Discourse analysis 4. Framework analysis 5. Grounded Theory 1. The content analysis method categorizes verbal and behavioral information (Bloomberg & Volpe, 2019). This technique applies to various forms of recorded communication, such as interviews, surveys, observations, and written materials. By analyzing how individuals interact with each other, researchers can gather valuable insights from the data.
2. Examining how study participants share their personal experiences is part of narrative analysis. Researchers examine the data case by case, considering factors such as context, structure, substance, and tale performance. The researcher can interpret the participants' narratives and how they relate to the research by examining these features. 3. Discourse analysis involves analyzing the language used in collected data. This type of study focuses on how participants use language in their responses, as the same discourse can have different meanings for different people. Researchers go beyond the surface-level meaning to better understand the participants' opinions (Bloomberg & Volpe, 2019). 4. Researchers can categorize their data using framework analysis to facilitate understanding (Bloomberg & Volpe, 2019). A framework serves as a system for detecting patterns in qualitative research (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Meanwhile, any biases introduced into the study are controlled by the researcher. Staged and structured analyses are performed this way (Gale et al., 2013). 5. A grounded theory is a type of research methodology that examines whether a theory is supported by other cases using a single case as its basis. This method helps discover new theories and involves collecting data from real-world participants. Researchers can use the data collected to explain the results of their investigation as more information is collected (Bloomberg & Volpe, 2019). Data Analysis Procedures Following Bloomberg and Volpe (2019), qualitative research analysis consists of five steps. 1. Identifying big ideas based on the data 2. Sorting and labeling data
